Moss-grown lava fields, lava fortresses, and hills of birch trees are what make it unique. To get to the Borgarfjörður Saga Geopark, still awaiting approval from UNESCO European Geoparks to become a member of its network, we head to the Hvalfjörður fjord into the Hvalfjarðargöng underground road tunnel, the first underwater tunnel in Iceland which is among the longest underwater road tunnels in the world. Before driving to the remote rural districts of Borgarfjörður, we'll drive over Borgarfjarðarbrú bridge, the second-longest bridge in Iceland, and make a stop in the Borgarnes town for refreshments and restrooms, and stretch our legs after the drive before heading to Borgarfjörður. Moving on, you'll pass beautiful farmsteads which from spring till fall will have a lot of Icelandic sheep and their lambs grazing the fields. The single-lane Hvítárbrú bridge used to connect the northern and southern parts of Iceland before Borgarfjarðarbrú superseded it. It's a beautiful drive to an even more beautiful area of birch and lava fields.The first stop of the Silver Circle is Deildartunguhver hot spring, which has the highest flow rate in hot springs in Europe. It is used for central heating to heat buildings in the area, with 180 liters of water at 97°C flowing each second. Next, we'll head to Reykholt village, where the greatest literature of Iceland was written by Snorri Sturluson, who lived there in the 13th century and wrote the Icelandic Sagas. He is also believed to have written Heimskringla and the Icelandic Edda - the inspirations to J.R.R. Tolkien for his worlds of the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. In Reykholt, Snorri used to bathe in Snorralaug, a hot spring pool built in AD 960 that is the oldest of its kind in Iceland, and he frequently bathed in. Iceland is renowned for being a nation of books and sagas and around 10% of the nation has published a book in their lifetime.Before visiting Húsafell, we'll stop by two neighboring waterfalls, the cascading Hraunfossar and Barnafoss. Hraunfossar is formed by a series of streams in close vicinity to each other, streaming out of a kilometer stretch across the Grábrókarhraun lava field. Barnafoss races down a narrow valley, its name coming from the sad story of two young brothers who drowned in it, while trying to cross the river over a stone bridge that their mother is believed to have had demolished after. Several viewing platforms offer a great view over Hraunfossar and its surroundings, and a new bridge allows you to walk towards Barnafoss to enjoy its beauty. The historic farm and church estate Húsafell is the next stop. This birch tree-covered lava area is a beautiful oasis, surrounded by mountains and the glaciers Langjökull, Eiríksjökull, Þórisjökull, and Ok jökull, which isn't a glacier anymore since it was deemed the first dead glacier in Iceland in 2019. Ok is the first of the Icelandic glaciers to melt to the point of not being up to the standard of being considered a glacier. Húsafell is completely self-sustainable and a popular summer house area.Now for even more breathtaking landscapes, your private guide will head to the Grábrókargígar volcanic craters. This scoria cone row belongs to a volcanic system that stretches to the Snæfellsnes peninsula. A footpath leads up to the top of the biggest crater Stóra-Grábrók, for a view over the Grábrókarhraun lava field which flowed from these craters 2,000-3,000 years ago. A short drive away is the last stop of the day; the waterfall Glanni and Paradísarlaut hollow. This small but beautiful waterfall has three side-by-side drops with multiple tiers and its water froths when hitting the rocks down the stream. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge rises above sea level on this peninsula and it is lined with four volcanic systems from SW to NE, containing craters, faults, open volcanic fissures, large and small lava shields, and high-temperature geothermal fields. Fisheries have long been a lifeline of the locals, with fishing towns and villages along the black-sanded coastline, some even dating back centuries.In 2015, Reykjanes was recognized as a Global Geopark by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) for its geological heritage in connection with the area's natural and cultural heritage. UNESCO Global Geoparks have sites and landscapes of international geological significance, managed with a holistic concept of education, protection, and sustainability.The Reykjanes UNESCO Global Geopark has 55 geosites and we will start on the outermost point of the peninsula at Garðskagi. Two lighthouses stand there bearing the same name Garðskagaviti. The older one dating back to 1897 is the second oldest lighthouse in Iceland while the newer one dating back to 1944 is the tallest lighthouse in our country. Both lighthouses offer a unique 360° view over the Atlantic Ocean and inland, and by the coast are varied species of sea birds, seals, and whales. Heading south from Garðskagi by the coastline, we next stop at the unique black church Hvalsneskirkja. This is among our favorite Icelandic churches, built with basalt lava rocks and crafted inside with driftwood, both collected within the region by locals. Its colorful tower makes for a great contrast against the basalt exterior and the surrounding mossy lava field.Closeby is another lighthouse, the picturesque yellow-colored Stafnesviti, overlooking the rocky coast of Básendar which used to be the largest fishing and trading post in the area before a flood caused by a terrible storm destroyed the whole town in 1799, changing the shoreline forever. We then head further south through the lava field with the rocky coastline to our right, to the wooden black church Kirkjuvogskirkja in the fishing village Hafnir. This is the oldest church on the Reykjanes peninsula, dating back to 1860. Standing close to shore, an anchor from the sailing ship Jamestown is kept to commemorate when the residents woke up one morning finding that the ship had run aground after drifting abandoned and filled with valuable timber over the Atlantic Ocean. Most of that timber was then used for building houses and bridges all over Iceland.We continue our way to the Bridge Between Continents, a symbolic bridge over a fissure between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. With the Mid-Atlantic Ridge lying through and these plates constantly rafting, this is among the few places on Earth where they can be seen above ground. Next up is the colorful and active geothermal area Gunnuhver, with mud pools, hot springs, and steam vents surrounded by lava fields and a sulphuric landscape. Walking trails run throughout the area between observation decks, overlooking this spectacular ever-changing area. A short drive from there takes you to Reykjanesviti, the oldest lighthouse in Iceland on top of a hill dating back to 1907. A walking path leads to the peak of Valahnúkur, where the first-ever lighthouse built in Iceland stood, before being damaged by earthquakes and powerful waves on this most southwestern point of the peninsula. Valahnúkur is an eroded sea cliff that formed in an eruption over 10,000 years ago and is now a popular nesting site for seabirds. The music video Volcano Man starring Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams was mainly shot here. Valahnúkamöl is a beach filled with large boulders created by powerful storms and waves, and looking out into the Atlantic Ocean is Eldey, a high stack of islands with the largest gannet colony in the world. The last mating pair of Great Auks were killed there in 1844, and by Valahnúkur is a statue of a Great Auk in memory of this extinct species.Heading east we stop by the small coastal rock pool Brimketill which rests by the coastline. Pounding waves have carved the cliffs throughout the years and formed this pool, which looks tempting to take a dip in when the weather is calm, but it is highly advised against due to sudden waves sneaking up on you and sucking you out to sea. This is the first national park in Iceland and the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in our country. You will start at Hakið lava mesa, a viewpoint that gives you an amazing view over the Thingvellir area and Thingvallavatn, the largest natural lake in Iceland (about 83.7 square kilometers and 114 meters at its deepest point). You go down from Hakið into Almannagjá by Thingvallabær rectory, today serving as the Prime Minister's summer house, and Thingvallakirkja, a beautiful wooden church representative for common Icelandic churches. In Almannagjá dwells Öxarárfoss, a 12-meter man-made waterfall from when the Vikings changed the course of the Öxará river to channel into Almannagjá, so they could water their horses and sheep when assembling at Althingi each summer, the Icelandic parliament.Thingvellir may look familiar to you if you're a Game of Thrones fan, since episodes 1, 5, and 8 of season four were shot here.Driving through the wooden Thingvellir National Park, passing more beautiful farmsteads, the next stop is the Geysir hot springs geothermal area in Haukadalur valley. This high-temperature area with its colorful hot springs and mud pools is the only place in Europe with hot springs that spout. Geysir is Iceland's most well-known geological phenomenon, giving its collective name geyser to all other hot springs in the world. It is dormant and hasn't spouted since 2016, but its neighbor Strokkur still does every 5-8 minutes, shooting 30 meters of scalding geothermal water into the air. Earthquakes in the area and volcanic activity in our country may cause Geysir to awaken and other hot springs in this geothermal area to show changes.The last stop is what the Golden Circle derives its name from; Gullfoss waterfall, meaning Golden Falls. This magnificent tiered three-step waterfall is considered the queen of all waterfalls in Iceland, plunging 32 meters into a narrow basaltic gorge. The white glacial river Hvítá, fed by the Langjökull glacier, gives Gullfoss its white and blueish color, and on sunny days its spraying mist forms a spectacular rainbow, sometimes even a double rainbow.Driving further south we get closer to the coastline with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and volcanoes and glaciers on the other side, and even the famous Hekla volcano can be seen from the road.We make our first stop on the South Coast at the unique waterfall Seljalandsfoss, which drops like a curtain off a cliff into a beautiful meadow. Behind is a small cave and a walking path extending around the waterfall. This makes for a great angle to photograph this very picturesque waterfall and its surroundings, but be sure to wear good shoes and waterproof clothing before going behind it. We head on and drive past the ice cap Eyjafjallajökull which covers the caldera of a volcano that last erupted in 2010, memorably affecting air traffic throughout Europe. From the road, you will immediately spot the mesmerizing Skógafoss in the tiny Skógar village. It is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland dropping wide from a cliff that formerly marked the coastline. If the sun is out, the spraying from Skógafoss will form a rainbow and sometimes two. A staircase next to it leads up to a platform above this waterfall, giving you a great view over farmsteads to the ocean and on-site museums give you insight into how Icelanders lived throughout history.Our last stop is Reynisfjara black sand beach, the most popular visit on the South Coast, with the high basalt pinnacles Reynisdrangar rising out of the sea, and extremely powerful ocean waves crashing against the basalt-columned wall of mountain Reynisfjall and steadily eroding the Hálsanefhellir basalt cave by the beach. Here you need to be extra cautious, as these waves are known as "sneaker waves". Though they may sometimes look calm and harmless, they have snuck up on people and pulled them into the sea, causing fatal tragedies throughout the years when people have gotten too close to the sea. Most of them lived on farmsteads with self-sufficiency farming but soon Reykjavik became an important fishing and trading post, making Reykjavíkurhöfn, the Old Harbor of Reykjavik, the main lifeline of its residents and the neighborhood area. With that farmers and workers from the rural area of Iceland started moving to this fishing village around 1800 for jobs in the fishing industry, building small turf cottages in the downtown area by the harbor around the main street Aðalstræti, the oldest part of this city. From there the village grew with more buildings built and fewer farmsteads. Despite that, there is still one old sheep farmer left in the borough of Breiðholt with a sheep shed in his back garden. Reykjavik was granted municipal powers in 1786 but it wasn't called a city until 1962. Reykjavik City is divided into 8 boroughs and as of January 1st, 2022 Iceland has a population of 376,248 and 134,599 living in these boroughs. The whole Reykjavik Capital Area consists of seven municipalities with a population of 240,882, meaning 64% of Iceland's population lives in the Reykjavik Capital Area. Adding to that, many attend work and school in Reykjavik from other closeby municipalities.We will take a walk around the downtown city of Reykjavik where it all started. First, you'll meet your private guide by the entrance of Hallgrímskirkja, a church built differently from the typical small wooden churches of Iceland. This best-known landmark of Reykjavik stands 74m (244 ft) tall on top of the hill Skólavörðuholt and is the highest church in Iceland. Its design was inspired by glaciers and the basaltic cliffs and mountains in Iceland, designed by the renowned Guðjón Samúelsson who was the State Architect of Iceland and designed many of the most beautiful buildings in Iceland, like the University of Iceland, the first luxury hotel Hotel Borg, and the only Catholic church in Iceland the Roman Catholic Cathedral. For a small fee on-site, you can take an elevator up the church's bell tower for an amazing panoramic view over the city and its surrounding mountain rows, and in front of the church's entrance is the statue of Leifur Eiríksson, the famous Norse explorer who settled in North America around AD 1000 before Christopher Columbus. From there we walk a street leading downhill called Skólavörðustígur, otherwise known as Reykjavik Rainbow Street. This beautiful street of cafés, stores, and galleries, was partly painted in the colors of the rainbow as part of the Reykjavik Pride parade held in August every year, to represent Iceland's friendliness towards the LGBTQ community. Taking a selfie at the bottom of the rainbow-colored Skólavörðustígur with Hallgrímskirkja towering in the background makes for a great memory to photograph. We continue our way downwards to where Stjórnarráðshúsið stands, which houses the Prime Minister's Office. It was built as the House of Correction, locally called Tugthúsið, and before its construction, there was no prison in Iceland so those sentenced had to be sent overseas to Denmark since Iceland was under the reign of the Kingdom of Denmark.We now continue our way to the modern glass-honeycomb structured Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Center by the seafront, which has won a lot of awards for its structure inspired by Icelandic nature. It has amazing views over the bay extending to the mountain Esja and even to the glacier Snæfellsjökull. A walking path leads to the historic Old Harbor of Reykjavik which played a significant role in Reykjavik changing from a small fishing village into Iceland's capital city. Today it has many colorful houses with tourism operations, cafés, art galleries, and restaurants serving freshly caught fish from the harbor. We turn into the oldest part of Reykjavik called Grjótaþorp, or the Rock Village due to it being a field of rocks before they were removed to build the Cathedral of Reykjavik, for a glimpse of many of the oldest houses left from the 18th and 19th centuries in the oldest district of Reykjavik. Aðalstræti was the first street in Reykjavik and the main shopping street for goods delivered through the Old Harbor. This area is where clusters of turf houses built by workers and fishermen used to stand in between wooden buildings. Close by is the main public square of Reykjavik called Austurvöllur, with Hotel Borg, the Parliament House, and the Cathedral of Reykjavik standing alongside it, and cafés, bars, and restaurants on the other side. In the middle of the square is the statue of Jón Sigurðsson who was the main leader of Iceland gaining independence from the Kingdom of Denmark. One of the oldest parliaments in the world Alþingi was held every year at Thingvellir from AD 930 but then moved to Alþingishúsið or the Parliament House, a beautiful structure made of hewn dolerite that is a subvolcanic rock and behind it is an ornament garden believed to the be the oldest public garden in Iceland in its original appearance. Next to the Parliament house stands the neoclassical Lutheran church Cathedral of Reykjavik, the first building completed in the notion of Reykjavik becoming the capital city of Iceland.We end our walk by Reykjavíkurtjörn or the Pond of Reykjavik. Extending into this pond is the City Hall of Reykjavik, locally called Ráðhús Reykjavíkur, which houses the offices of the mayor, and on the ground floor a large 3D model of Iceland, called Íslandslíkanið. Like many other buildings in Reykjavik, the City Hall's structure was inspired by the mossy lava fields of Iceland, with a moss-grown wall by a rounded pond. Reykjavíkurtjörn, or Tjörnin for short, is popular among the locals for feeding the many species of water birds residing there. All year this area is buzzing with life, whether it be cycling, running or walking around Tjörnin, or ice skating during winters when it freezes over.

Its unique landscapes of rugged moss-grown lava fields, charming little fishing villages by the coastline, and wealth of remains and history dating back to the period of settlement and the formation of Iceland, makes for a whole day of "Iceland in miniature". The Snæfellsnes National Park is the first national park in Iceland to stretch from the top of a mountain with its boundaries reaching out into the ocean. At the far end of the Snæfellsnes National Park stands the renowned glacier Snæfellsjökull, believed to be one of the seven energy centers or chakras of the world due to the great powers and energy that many people sense when in its presence. It plays a big role in Jules Verne's science fiction Journey to the Center of the Earth published in 1864, and a movie of the same name in 2008 starring Brendan Fraser and the Icelandic actress Anita Briem.Getting to the Snæfellsnes peninsula, we will head from the Reykjavik Capital Area to the Hvalfjörður fjord and drive through the Hvalfjarðargöng underground road tunnel, the first underwater tunnel to be built in Iceland and among the longest underwater road tunnels in the world. Before we get to Snæfellsnes we'll drive over Borgarfjarðarbrú bridge, the second-longest bridge in Iceland, and make a stop in the town of Borgarnes for refreshments and restrooms, and to stretch our legs. After driving past a lot of beautiful farmsteads we turn on to Vatnaleið, a mountain pass between the north and south coasts of the Snæfellsnes peninsula, and stop at a rest stop by the Fossá river. From there you will have a vast view over the Selvallavatn lake surrounded by the 4,000-year-old rugged Berserkjahraun lava field which was created in an eruption of a row of four scoria craters. A short walk from the rest stop takes you to the two-ledged Selvallafoss waterfall which is also known as Sheep's Waterfall due to sheep sometimes resting on a ledge behind it. We drive a bit further and stop by one of the scoria craters that created Berserkjahraun, the high and wide Grákúla. It derives its name from the grey moss covering this otherwise beautifully red-colored crater. Now we make another turn and drive through the lava fields of Berserkjahraun to reach Grundarfjörður, the environmentally-conscious fishing town which lies by the roots of the very picturesque Kirkjufell mountain. If you're a Game of Thrones fan, you will immediately recognize this mountain as Arrowhead Mountain in seasons 6 and 7. Along with the small waterfall Kirkjufellsfoss, this pair makes for the main attraction and landmark of Grundarfjörður and one of the most photographed locations in Iceland. Next, we drive by the shore to the old market town Ólafsvík which used to be one of the largest trading posts in Iceland. We highly recommend having your lunch at our favorite restaurant here which offers a range of delicious courses with freshly caught fish from the harbor (and for those who are vegan, they also have a variety of great vegan dishes on their menu). After a short drive from Ólafsvík, we stop by a parking lot for a short walk to a viewing platform to admire the beautiful waterfall Svöðufoss, falling gracefully off a basalt-columned cliff.Now we reach the far end of Snæfellsnes and stop by the beautiful beach Skarðsvík which is different from the black beaches of Iceland. This secluded beach has golden sand surrounded by deep black fractured basalt columns and a bright aquamarine-colored ocean. Further west we stop by the first lighthouse of the day on the cape Öndverðarnes. For over 700 years since the 13th century, this was an old fishing station with a lot of fishermen's huts and a chapel on-site. Old relics and ruins from that time can be found in the area, but now the small orange-colored lighthouse Öndverðarnesviti stands on its westernmost point. South of it stands another orange lighthouse with two names; Svörtuloftaviti when seen from the sea and Skálasnagaviti on land. The coastline between these lighthouses is called Svörtuloft or Black Ceilings, deriving from the steep pitch-black lava cliffs that a lot of ships have crashed on and shattered in extreme weather. We now drive alongside the main landmark of the Snæfellsnes peninsula - the glacier cap Snæfellsjökull. Dominating the area, this mysterious glacier is said to keep great secrets. It is believed that the half-man half-troll and protector of Snæfellsnes Bárður Snæfellsás lives in it, disappeared after a tragedic family accident. Snæfellsjökull is an active volcano that last erupted 1,8000 years ago, so on top of this 1,446 m high glacier sits a 200 m deep crater bowl. We continue our way to the black pebble beach of Djúpalónssandur. A walking path through a lava field takes you to this magnificent beach with remains from the 1948 shipwreck of the British fishing trawler Epine GY7 scattered around. Both the pebbles of this beach and the shipwreck are protected, so they are to be kept there and not removed. Please admire this scenic area carefully and mind the strong waves coming ashore. Another shore close by gives you an amazing view of various cliff formations from an observation deck, all the to the abandoned farming area Malarrif where the 24 m high lighthouse Malarrifsviti stands. By the observation deck is the palagonite headland Svalþúfa with a cliff called Þúfubjarg beneath which is home to various nesting sea birds. Standing just out of the shore are the two rock pinnacles Lóndrangar, believed to be the elves' church and their library.Next are the twin villages of Hellnar and Arnarstapi. Hellnar was a large old fishing station dating back to 1560 but now only a few people live there. A cozy little café by the beach Hellnafjara is popular for the great views it offers from its patio and down by the beach is the remarkable cave Baðstofa inside the protruding boulder Valasnös. Its magical uniqueness lies in the coloration inside formed by the tides and different lightning hitting the scales of rocks inside. Arnarstapi is a small fishing village with strange rock formations along its coastline and cliffs filled with nesting sea birds. First, you're greeted by the huge statue of Bárður Snæfellsás, the aforementioned protector of Snæfellsnes. Then a walking trail takes you along the coastline for admiring various lava and basalt formations. The rock arch Gatklettur extends from the cliffs with a big hole through, and further along, are three holes in the ground with the ocean coming in and basalt cliffed walls with sea birds nesting on some days the strong ocean waves splash up into the air from these ravines. Nearing the end of this tour, we drive through farmlands by lava fields, and one of these farms was the home of a notorious killer. Axlar-Björn was the first serial killer in Iceland AND is still the only one. He lived on the farm Öxl in the 16th century, where he would kill travelers passing by with an axe. Hiding their bodies in the cowshed, killed 9 people and kept their belongings until one traveler managed to escape. That led to the arrest of Björn who was sentenced to death. Before he was beheaded, his limbs were crushed with a sledgehammer and his body was cut down and put up on poles, and then his body parts were dug in three graves, to prevent him from returning to haunt the living, with cairns on top. One of these cairns still stands in a lava field by Hellnar and is declared protected. After we've passed Öxl we turn to the very small village of Búðir by the edge of the pitch-black Búðahraun lava field. One of the most photographed churches in Iceland is the black wooden Búðakirkja church with its white window and door frames and a stonewall around its graveyard. It's a replica of the former church and the only reminder left of this former vibrant fishing village. Further down is a green-yellowish beach of olivine sand, which is very rare in the world. We make our way to our last stop which is the golden sand beach Ytri-Tunga. It has a large seal colony and is very popular for seal watching, especially over summer. Two seal species, the harbor seal and the grey seal reside here peacefully in harmony. The most recent lava in the field is believed to have flowed from a 6 km (3.7 mi) long volcanic fissure around AD 1000. On the way, we pass Ingólfsfjall mountain where the settler of Iceland Ingólfur Arnarsson is believed to be buried. Driving further south we get closer to the coastline with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and volcanoes and glaciers on the other side, and even the famous Hekla volcano can be seen from the road.We make our first stop at the unique waterfall Seljalandsfoss, which drops like a curtain off a cliff into a beautiful meadow. Behind is a small cave and a walking path extending around the waterfall. This makes for a great angle to photograph this very picturesque waterfall and its surroundings, but be sure to wear good shoes and waterproof clothing before going behind it. We head on and drive past the ice cap Eyjafjallajökull which covers the caldera of a volcano that last erupted in 2010, memorably affecting air traffic throughout Europe. From the road, you will immediately spot the mesmerizing Skógafoss in the tiny Skógar village. It is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland dropping wide from a cliff that formerly marked the coastline. If the sun is out, the spraying from Skógafoss will form a rainbow and sometimes two. A staircase next to it leads up to a platform above this waterfall, giving you a great view over farmsteads to the ocean and on-site museums give you insight into how Icelanders lived throughout history.Our next stop is the Reynisfjara black sand beach. This is among the most popular visits on the South Coast, with the high basalt pinnacles Reynisdrangar rising out of the sea, and extremely powerful ocean waves crashing against the basalt-columned wall of mountain Reynisfjall and steadily eroding the Hálsanefhellir basalt cave by the beach. Reynisfjara has been ranked as one of the top 10 non-tropical beaches in the world by National Geographic. Here you need to be extra cautious, as these waves are known as "sneaker waves". Though they may sometimes look calm and harmless, they have snuck up on people and pulled them into the sea, causing fatal tragedies throughout the years when people have gotten too close to the sea. Be careful while admiring this breathtaking area and please respect the puffins and other seabirds nesting in the basalt columns.After taking in the beauty of the beach, you'll head to Fjallsárlón, a lesser-known glacier lagoon that is equally stunning. The glacier lagoon is surrounded by mountains and glaciers, and you can take a boat ride on the lagoon to see the icebergs up close. The boat ride is a unique experience that allows you to get close to the icebergs and see the different shades of blue in the ice.Finally, you'll arrive at Jökulsárlón, the crown jewel of Iceland's glacier lagoons. Here, you can take a boat or kayak tour, depending on your preference, to get up close and personal with the stunning glaciers. The lagoon is filled with floating icebergs that have broken off from the glacier, and you'll see them in all shapes and sizes. You'll also see the Vatnajökull glacier, Europe's largest glacier, which covers about 8% of Iceland's landmass.From the lagoon, you can walk to the Diamond Beach, where you can see icebergs that have washed up on the black sand beach. The name of this beach comes from the icebergs that sparkle like diamonds in the sunlight.
