Itinerary
Day 1
Half-day family rafting trip starting from the rafting base at Hafgrímsstaðir (Varmahlíð) with transportation to the West Glacial River, guided rafting, riverside hot chocolate, and return to base.
Meet at rafting base — Hafgrímsstaðir, Varmahlíð
Arrival, check-in, confirm group sizes and medical notes. Staff will confirm kit sizes and overall plan for the day.
Tips from local experts:
- Arrive 20 minutes before your booked start time to allow time for check-in and sizing of drysuits.
- Bring your booking voucher or a photo of it and a photo ID for the person who booked.
- Wear quick-dry layers and indoor shoes you don't mind getting damp while you wait.
Kit up & safety briefing
Guides fit drysuits, helmets, PFDs and booties, then lead a safety briefing covering paddling technique, commands, and what to do if you fall in. This is mandatory for all participants.
Tips from local experts:
- Wear a lightweight base layer beneath the drysuit (thermal leggings and a wool/synthetic top). Avoid cotton.
- Remove jewelry and secure watches/fitbits; loose items must stay off while on the water.
- Children should remain with a caregiver during fitting; guides will confirm age/ability for safe participation.
Short transfer from base to river (included)
Group transport from the rafting base to the river put-in. Transport time is kept short; staff will direct loading and stow drybags/valuables safely.
Tips from local experts:
- Keep essential items (phone, keys, medication) in a small waterproof container or hand them to staff for stowage.
- Expect a short ride on a company minibus or trailer; wear layers as wind can be chilly during transfer.
- Inform staff at check-in if anyone in your group needs assistance boarding or exiting the vehicle.
Rafting on the West Glacial River
Guided family rafting through gentle rapids and canyon scenery. Expect opportunities for playful water fights, short scenic stops, and safety kayakers in support. Guides will point out riverside hot springs and manage the pace for families.
Tips from local experts:
- Listen carefully to guide commands; sit firmly and hold the paddle correctly — guides will demonstrate before launch.
- If you want photos, use a secured action camera or leave phones with staff in a drybag to avoid water damage.
- Be prepared for cool glacial water splashes even in summer; children often enjoy playful sections but should always wear their PFDs.
Riverside hot chocolate & short rest
A short riverside stop where staff serve hot chocolate from a natural kettle and everyone can warm up, take photos, and enjoy the scenery.
Tips from local experts:
- Stepping onto river rocks can be slippery; keep to the guide's instructed areas and supervise children closely.
- Hot chocolate is served riverside—let staff know immediately about any food allergies or dietary restrictions.
- Keep jacket and spare socks handy so kids can warm up quickly after paddling.
Return to base, change and debrief
Short transfer back to the rafting base for changing into dry clothes, equipment return, and a brief debrief with guides. Opportunity to ask questions about local river geology and safe river practices.
Tips from local experts:
- Bring a dry towel and a complete change of clothes in a waterproof bag for after the trip.
- Store valuables with your vehicle or hand them to staff for temporary safekeeping during the trip.
- Allow time after changing for final restroom use and to collect any rental items before departing the base.
