Tips from local experts:
- Bring a hat and sunscreen—the site is exposed with limited shade.
- Wear sturdy walking shoes; paths are unpaved and uneven.
- Carry a small amount of water; bottled water is handy for the drive and the site.
Mud Volcanoes of Gobustan
Visit the nearby mud volcano area to see the unique bubbling mud formations and learn why Azerbaijan has so many of these features. Exploration lasts about 45 minutes.
Tips from local experts:
- Expect occasional mud splashes and a mild sulfur smell—avoid sitting on fresh mud cones.
- Phone cameras can get dirty—carry a small soft cloth to wipe lenses.
- Follow your guide's path and do not walk on fragile formations; some areas are off-limits.
Bibi-Heybat Mosque (short visit)
Return toward Baku to visit the Bibi-Heybat Mosque. This is a short, 15-minute stop to view the mosque and its architecture; your guide will provide a brief cultural and historical overview.
Tips from local experts:
- Dress modestly for mosque grounds: shoulders and knees covered; women may be asked to cover hair.
- Keep quiet and respectful; this is an active place of worship.
- Have your camera ready; the exterior architecture is the primary focus during this short visit.
Leisurely lunch (1 hour)

- Ask your guide for a recommended quick local dish if you'd like to try Azerbaijani cuisine within the time available.
Ateshgah (Fire Temple) — Surakhani
Visit the historic Ateshgah Fire Temple in Surakhani. Spend about an hour exploring the site and learning about its Zoroastrian and pilgrimage history.
Tips from local experts:
- Paths around the temple are short but may be uneven—comfortable shoes recommended.
- The site is open-air; bring a light jacket if winds are strong near the shore.
- Photography is allowed of the complex; avoid obstructing other visitors during explanations.
Yanardag Reserve / Mammadli village (Burning Mountain)
Head to the Yanardag (Burning Mountain) area in the village of Mammadli. Spend approximately 45 minutes with your guide observing the natural gas fires and learning about the reserve.
Tips from local experts:
- The burning flames are steady but avoid getting too close—follow the guide's safety instructions.
- Evening breezes can be strong; keep loose items secured and be mindful of ash or dust.
- Bring a light snack if needed; this stop is outdoors with limited facilities nearby.
Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center (30-minute stop)
Conclude the outward tour with a 30-minute stop outside the Heydar Aliyev Center. Your guide will provide an overview of the building and local cultural context before returning to Baku hotels.
Tips from local experts:
- The area around the center is good for photos—watch for vehicle traffic on Heydar Aliyev Avenue.
