Small-group Northern Lights safaris from Bodø. From early September to April we drive from town into the countryside to find clear skies and the best vantage points for aurora viewing. Routes are flexible each night: the guide checks weather and geomagnetic forecasts and may visit many candidate spots to maximise visibility. Itinerary
Day 1
Bodø sits just above the Arctic Circle and offers good access to rural viewing locations after dark. Join a small-group northern lights drive that ventures into the countryside; the exact route changes nightly based on cloud cover and geomagnetic forecasts.
Check-in at Scandic Havet (meeting point)
Arrive in the lobby of Scandic Havet Hotel for check-in and a brief safety/orientation talk with your guide. The guide will confirm clothing, hand out tripods if needed, and review the night's plan before departure.

- Arrive 10–15 minutes before the scheduled meeting time to allow time for check-in at the hotel lobby and a quick briefing.
- Bring your booking confirmation and a form of photo ID for check-in if requested by the guide.
- Use the hotel restrooms before departure—the countryside stops have limited facilities.
Northern Lights safari — 19:00 departure (approx. 7 hours)
Depart from Scandic Havet and drive into areas around Bodø chosen for clear skies. The guide will stop at multiple vantage points as conditions change. Expect long outdoor periods standing and short walks at viewing spots. Hot drinks and basic winter clothing are provided.
Tips from local experts:
- Dress in layers and use the provided winter garments; temperatures can be much colder outside town even if the town feels milder.
- Bring a camera with manual settings and a tripod (tripods are provided if needed); set your camera to long exposure and check battery life as cold reduces battery performance.
- Plan for limited mobile signal at remote viewpoints—share any urgent messages before departure and carry any necessary medications in a small bag.
Check-in at Scandic Havet (late meeting option)
Alternative late meeting for the 23:00 departure: brief orientation and equipment check in the hotel lobby before the late-night drive.

- If you join the late departure, rest before meeting and confirm transport arrangements to the hotel lobby in advance.
- Have a warm drink and a light snack beforehand; the later departure has fewer comfortable indoor breaks.

Northern Lights safari — 23:00 departure (approx. 4 hours)
Shorter, late-night alternative departure focused on targeting a few high-probability sites based on the night's forecasts. Same vehicle and inclusions apply. Return time depends on conditions and can be after midnight.
Tips from local experts:
- This later departure is more intense and returns very late; plan onward travel or accommodation accordingly.
- Charge camera and phone batteries fully before the trip and keep spare batteries warm in an inner pocket.
- If you are sensitive to cold or need more frequent breaks, mention this to the guide at check-in so stops can be arranged when feasible.
