Itinerary
Day 1
Shared transfer from accommodation to Ponta de São Lourenço, self-guided PR8 hike, return transfer to accommodation.
Shared transfer — pickup from accommodation
Driver/host collects guests from their accommodation in the Funchal / Caniço / Santa Cruz / Machico pickup area and transfers to the trailhead. Vehicle is air-conditioned; up to 8 guests per van.
Tips from local experts:
- Confirm and reconfirm your exact pickup address the day before the hike; vehicle description and driver name are sent the evening prior.
- Bring a small daypack with the essentials (water, sunscreen, hat) so you're ready when the van arrives; infant seats are unavailable—plan accordingly.
- Be ready 5–10 minutes before the scheduled pickup to keep the shared transfer on time for other guests.
PR8 Vereda da Ponta São Lourenço — self-guided hike (start at Baía d'Abra)
Arrival at the trailhead; short briefing from the driver/host with trail map and safety notes, then self-guided walk along the PR8 peninsula. Round-trip trail of approximately 6.8–7.5 km; allow ~4 hours walking at an easy, family-friendly pace. Terrain is exposed coastal path with minimal elevation (max ~120 m).
Tips from local experts:
- The official hiking permit / forest fee is not included. Buy the required permit in advance or follow the instructions you receive after booking — the site/operator will advise how to purchase the IFCN ticket.
- Early departures can be chilly and windy; bring a warm, windproof layer and sturdy walking shoes with good grip for rocky, uneven sections.
- Stick to the marked trail, supervise children on cliff-edge sections, and carry at least 1–1.5 L water per adult (there are no services on the peninsula).
Return transfer — drop-off at accommodation
Shared transfer collects the group from the trail end and returns guests to their original pickup area (Funchal / Caniço / Santa Cruz / Machico). Driver/host handles drop-offs in sequence.
Tips from local experts:
- The driver/host will usually drop guests off in the order of pickup — keep essentials with you during the hike so you're ready at the meeting point.
- Expect some time between trail finish and your specific drop-off depending on other guests' locations; plan light snacks for the return if needed.
- Keep any litter with you until you return to the vehicle; there are no trash facilities on the trailhead.
