Itinerary
Day 1
Pickup from Catania accommodation; transfer to Etna South area. Guided walks across lava flows, a lava-tube cave visit, Silvestri Craters sunset viewpoint and a local products tasting in Zafferana Etnea. Return to Catania by end of tour.
Pickup & transfer to Etna; lava cave introduction and hike toward 2,000 m
Pickup from guest accommodation in Catania and scenic transfer up Mount Etna. Begin with an introduction on lava flows and vegetation, then enter a lava cave (flashlights and helmets provided) and continue a guided walk toward approx. 2,000 m through lunar landscapes, lava bombs and small craters while the group moves toward sunset viewpoints.
Tips from local experts:
- Wear closed, sturdy walking shoes and a light jacket; temperatures drop after sunset at higher altitude.
- Bring a small daypack with water and a camera; helmets and flashlights are provided for the cave portion.
- If your accommodation is in a pedestrian zone, be ready to meet the vehicle at a nearby street — confirm pickup point on booking voucher.
Silvestri Craters (sunset viewpoint)
Short walk to the Silvestri Craters on Etna’s southeastern slope. Enjoy panoramic views toward the Ionian coast and the Gulf of Catania as the light changes — this is the tour’s sunset ‘special moment’. Time allotted for photography and to admire distant active craters when visible.
Tips from local experts:
- Sunset light changes quickly — be on the lookout for the group guide’s suggested viewpoint for the best unobstructed view.
- Carry a light windproof layer and avoid standing on loose ash; follow the guide’s route across crater edges.
- Restrooms are limited near the parking areas; use facilities before short walks where available.
Lava tube (lava cave) exploration
Explore a short lava tube formed by past lava flows. Walk safely inside the tube with the provided helmets and flashlights while the guide explains volcanic formation processes.
Tips from local experts:
- Kneel or crouch where indicated in narrow sections; follow the guide and wear the provided helmet at all times inside the tube.
- Bring a small torch as backup and keep electronic devices secure; humidity and dust can affect cameras.
- This section includes uneven ground; the activity is not stroller- or wheelchair-accessible.
Local products tasting at Oro Etna
End the guided portion with a tasting of Etna products — local wine, olive oil and honey — at Oro Etna in Zafferana Etnea (Etna East). Time for a relaxed tasting and brief Q&A about local production methods before the return transfer to Catania.
Tips from local experts:
- Inform the guide in advance of any food allergies or dietary restrictions so hosts can adapt the tasting where possible.
- If you prefer a quieter seating area, mention this on arrival — tastings are typically arranged for small shared tables.
- Allow space in your luggage if you plan to purchase bottles or jars; merchants can advise on safe packing for travel.
