Itinerary
Day 1
Private day trip from Christchurch visiting Lake Lyndon, Castle Hill (Kura Tāwhiti), Devil's Punchbowl lookout, and Cave Stream Scenic Reserve. Pickup from central Christchurch; travel time is included.
Lake Lyndon (Te Hāpua Waikawa) – short alpine lake stop
Lake Lyndon, also known as Te Hāpua Waikawa, is a picturesque alpine lake located near Porters Pass on State Highway 73. This stop is a short scenic visit to take in alpine lake views and photos.
Tips from local experts:
- Bring a light windproof jacket — conditions at Porters Pass can change quickly even on warm days.
- There are no cafes at the lake — pack any snacks you need or plan to buy lunch later in Arthur's Pass area.
- Keep cameras and phones secure — strong crosswinds at the roadside viewpoint can affect tripods and loose items.
Kura Tāwhiti / Castle Hill – limestone boulder field
Castle Hill (Kura Tāwhiti) is a renowned limestone boulder field celebrated for its striking rock formations. Time here allows for short walks, boulder scrambling for those who want it, and photography.
Tips from local experts:
- Wear sturdy shoes with good grip for scrambling over limestone boulders; parts of the field are uneven.
- Stick to established paths where present and avoid climbing wet rock surfaces — they can be very slippery.
- There is limited shade and no formal cafe — carry water and sun protection; toilets are available at the reserve car park.
Devil’s Punchbowl Walking Track – short waterfall hike
The Devil’s Punchbowl Walking Track in Arthur’s Pass National Park is a short but rewarding hike through beech forest, crossing footbridges and finishing at a viewing platform with close-up waterfall views.
Tips from local experts:
- The track has boardwalks and steps — bring comfortable walking shoes and be prepared for some short steep sections.
- Carry a lightweight rain layer; spray from the waterfall can make the viewing platform damp.
- There is limited shade on the track; plan any lunch break nearby as meals are not included in the tour.
Cave Stream Scenic Reserve – limestone cave walk (seasonal conditions apply)
Cave Stream Scenic Reserve features a 594‑metre limestone cave that offers an adventurous walkthrough for those equipped and prepared. The guide will assess conditions before entering; participants can opt to view from the entrance if conditions aren't suitable.
Tips from local experts:
- Cave Stream involves wet, uneven footing — wear old shoes that can get wet and warm layers for after the walk.
- The guide will check water levels before attempting the cave; do not enter the cave without their approval.
- There are basic car parking and toilet facilities at the reserve entrance, but no food services — plan accordingly.
