Itinerary
Day 1
Late-afternoon / golden-hour self-guided kayak rental around Big Hickory Island with a short beach stop for shelling and a relaxed post-paddle coffee.
Meet & Check-in — Mike's Coastal Expeditions (gear, maps & quick orientation)
Arrive at Mike's Coastal Expeditions for check-in, sign waivers, get your laminated route map, dry bag, carbon-fibre paddles and life vests. Staff will give a brief safety orientation and point out suggested paddling routes to Big Hickory Island and nearby shelling beaches.
Tips from local experts:
- Ask for a recommended route that times the return with golden hour — the staff know the best shallow channels for calmer water.
- Secure phones/cameras in the dry bag and keep one small camera in an easy-access waterproof pouch for sunset photos.
- Confirm tide direction with staff — an incoming tide is best for clearer water and easier beach access; mention if you want a clear-tandem (for romantic photos).
Short transfer to the launch / put-in (Big Hickory Island area)
Drive a short distance (or follow staff directions) to the designated put-in near Big Hickory Island. This is where you'll carry your kayak to the water and do final adjustments before launching.
Tips from local experts:
- Park shoes and a lightweight bag near the launch so you can stroll onto the beach together — the vendor will point to the most convenient access point.
- If you brought a picnic, keep it in the dry bag and secure it low in the kayak to keep a low center of gravity for two-person paddles.
- Check wind direction once at the put-in; sheltered inlets and mangrove channels are calmer and make for more intimate paddling.
2-hour Self-guided Kayak Paddle — Big Hickory Island & mangrove channels
Paddle together (clear tandem or standard tandem single as booked) around the island, through mangrove tunnels and to quiet sandbars. Follow the laminated map provided to find calm viewing spots and secluded beaches for shelling and photos.
Tips from local experts:
- Plan your route to arrive at a small beach or sandbar about 30–45 minutes before sunset for a private golden-hour moment — tandems are perfect for cozy photos.
- Bring a small snack and a single-serving bottle of bubbly (kept in the dry bag) to enjoy while watching the sun; remove caps while on land to avoid spills.
- Respect wildlife and stay at a comfortable distance from wading birds and nesting areas — quieter paddling creates the best romantic atmosphere.
Beach stop: Shelling & short picnic at Barefoot Beach Preserve (secluded sandbar option)
Hop ashore at a quiet stretch for 30 minutes of shelling and a brief picnic or photo session. Barefoot Beach Preserve is one of the area’s best places for shells and a beautiful, uncrowded backdrop for couples.
Tips from local experts:
- Head to the wrack line (where seaweed collects) — many of the nicest shells accumulate there after tides.
- For a romantic touch, spread a small towel and sit facing the water while the late light softens; bring insect repellent for dusk if you plan to linger.
- Barefoot Beach Preserve has boardwalk access and facilities if you need an accessible restroom — check ahead with staff for the nearest accessible landing if needed.
Return to put-in, gear return & relaxed post-paddle coffee
Paddle back to the vendor put-in, rinse equipment as instructed and return kayaks. Finish with a relaxed coffee or iced drink to warm up (or cool down) and recap favourite moments.
Tips from local experts:
- Ask the staff to rinse the camera/data gear with fresh water before packing — salt can corrode connectors quickly.
- Choose an outdoor table for a casual wrap-up and to keep the relaxed seaside vibe; if you want a more intimate finish, request a quieter corner inside.
- If you’re staying for sunset photos, bring a small travel blanket; evening breezes can feel cool after paddling — the staff often have spare towels if needed.
