Itinerary
Day 1
A relaxed, family-friendly full-day loop: hotel pickup in Geneva, morning coffee and vineyard walk in Lavaux, cheese-making demonstration in Gruyères, castle stroll and lunch, chocolate factory visit in Broc, short vineyard wine tasting on the return, then drop-off back in Geneva.
Hotel pickup — Geneva (meet & board)
Your guide and driver will pick your family up directly from your hotel or apartment in Geneva. Please be ready 15 minutes before the scheduled departure window to allow time for everyone to board and secure child seats if pre-arranged.
Tips from local experts:
- Confirm your exact pickup address and request child car seats when you book — Swiss regulations require appropriate restraints for young children.
- Have a small backpack with snacks, sunscreen and a change of clothes for little ones — the day includes outdoor stops.
- Keep electronic tickets and emergency contact details accessible; guide will confirm a final pickup time by message the evening before.
Drive: Geneva → Lavaux (Chexbres)
Comfortable air-conditioned van drive along Lake Geneva's north shore toward the Lavaux terraced vineyards. Scenic photo stops possible en route depending on traffic.
Tips from local experts:
- Bring motion-sickness remedies if anyone in your family is prone to car sickness; the route has a few bends with great views.
- Older strollers can be folded and stored in the van — ask the driver to help with loading/unloading.
- Point out the lake and mountain vistas to children — a quick binocular or kids' camera keeps them engaged during the drive.
Coffee break & short vineyard stroll — Le Deck (Chexbres)
Short stop at a family-friendly terrace with panoramic views over Lake Geneva. Enjoy coffee and juice for kids (own expense) and a gentle walk on a stroller-friendly vineyard path.
Tips from local experts:
- Le Deck has a terrace with railings and shaded seating — ideal for families. Ask for a spot with good shade for small children.
- Stroller note: the terrace is level but vineyard paths can be gravel; use a foldable stroller or carry baby in a sling for the 5–10 minute walk.
- Restrooms and baby-changing facilities are available in the restaurant — good time to change nappies before the next stretch of driving.
Drive: Lavaux → La Maison du Gruyère (Gruyères)
Scenic drive into the Fribourg Pre-Alps toward the alpine village of Gruyères for a cheese factory visit and village exploration.
Tips from local experts:
- The drive is approximately 1 hour–1 hour 15 minutes — pack quiet activities (colouring book, tablet with headphones) to occupy younger children.
- There are a few short tunnels and mountain stretches; bring a light jacket as temperatures can be cooler inland.
- Ask the driver for a quick stretch stop if your family needs to move around before arriving at the factory.
La Maison du Gruyère — Cheese-making tour & tasting
Guided tour of the traditional Gruyère cheese-making process followed by sampling fresh Gruyère AOP. Hands-on demonstrations and displays make it fun for kids and adults alike.
Tips from local experts:
- Family tip: the visit is great for kids 4+ — younger children enjoy the sights and tasting too but may get restless; bring a small snack as a backup.
- Accessibility: parts of the site have steps and production areas are on different levels — a baby carrier is easier than a stroller for close-up viewing.
- Tasting note: cheese portions can be shared for little ones; ask staff for a mild sample if children are new to strong cheeses.
Explore Gruyères village & Château de Gruyères
Stroll the cobbled streets of the fairytale village and visit Château de Gruyères — family-friendly exhibits and panoramic views from the castle ramparts.
Tips from local experts:
- Cobblestones and narrow lanes: use a durable stroller or child carrier; comfortable shoes for adults and kids are recommended.
- Castle accessibility: the château has staircases and some uneven flooring — there is limited step-free access, so older adults and toddlers should plan accordingly.
- Snack break: there are small shops selling local pastries and hot chocolate — a great mid-visit treat to keep children fuelled before lunch.
Family lunch — Le Chalet de Gruyères
Enjoy a relaxed, family-friendly lunch featuring local specialties (fondue, röstis, soups) and children's options. High chairs are typically available.
Tips from local experts:
- Order kid-friendly dishes early (pasta, omelette) to avoid long waits for fondue and shared dishes.
- Le Chalet offers hearty plates — ask for smaller portions or share platters with the little ones to reduce waste.
- Allergies: Swiss restaurants are used to dietary needs; tell the server about allergies and they will advise on safe options.
Drive: Gruyères → Maison Cailler (Broc)
Short scenic drive down to Broc for the interactive Maison Cailler chocolate factory experience.
Tips from local experts:
- Drive time is short (approximately 15–25 minutes) — perfect chance for a quick restroom stop if needed.
- Tell the children to keep an eye out for the chocolate-coloured factory from the road — builds excitement for the tasting ahead.
- Store leftover snacks from lunch in your bag to avoid sticky hands in the van before the chocolate visit.
Maison Cailler — Interactive chocolate tour & tasting
A family favourite: interactive exhibits, hands-on chocolate-making demos and a generous tasting. The route is stroller-friendly and geared to kids.
Tips from local experts:
- The tour is designed for families — kids love the multimedia displays and taste testing; book an early slot to avoid crowds.
- Facilities: there are baby-changing rooms and accessible restrooms at the site — ideal for families with infants.
- Sticky-hands hack: bring a small pack of wet wipes and a spare T-shirt for little ones — tasting stations can get messy and are worth it!
Drive: Broc → Lavaux (Bourg-en-Lavaux) for wine tasting
Return drive toward the lakeside vineyards where a family-friendly tasting awaits — non-alcoholic grape juice options are available for children.
Tips from local experts:
- Travel time is around 40–55 minutes; this is a good window for a nap for younger children after the chocolate excitement.
- At booking, request a family-friendly tasting where hosts serve small portions and provide grape juice alternatives for kids.
- Paths in the vineyards can be uneven — bring a carrier for toddlers and sturdy shoes for older kids.
Lavaux Vinorama — Family-friendly tasting (Bourg-en-Lavaux area)
Sample local Chasselas wines while kids enjoy grape juice and a short guided walk with sweeping views over Lake Geneva. The tasting is geared to families and includes a brief explanation of the vineyard terraces.
Tips from local experts:
- Ask for a non-alcoholic tasting for kids (fresh grape juice) — most wineries in the Lavaux area happily provide this.
- Seating and shade are available at the Vinorama; use this quieter end-of-day stop to relax before the final drive.
- Keep children close near the terrace edges — the viewpoints are spectacular but can be exposed; use stroller brakes on sloped areas.
Return drive & drop-off in Geneva
Relax on the comfortable drive back to Geneva. Drop-off at your hotel or pre-agreed location completes the day.
Tips from local experts:
- Seatbelt and comfort check: ensure children are buckled and seats adjusted — the driver can help with straps if needed.
- If anyone needs an earlier drop-off en route back to Geneva (e.g., tired children), inform the guide at the wine tasting — flexible drop-offs are often possible.
- Plan a quiet activity for the final drive (a favourite story or playlist) to help little ones wind down after an exciting day.
