Itinerary
Day 1
One-hour ATV experience exploring recent lava flows and new craters near Grindavík. Optional pick-up available (request at booking). Follow the guide's safety briefing and stay with your assigned pairing — children must be accompanied by a guardian.
Optional pick-up from Keflavík (if requested)
Scheduled pick-up for guests who requested transfer from Keflavík. Driver and vehicle will collect guests and transfer to the base in Grindavík.
Tips from local experts:
- If you requested pick-up, be ready at the agreed pick-up point 5 minutes early; the scheduled pickup time for the 10:00 tour is 09:30.
- Confirm your exact pick-up address in Keflavík when booking (airport terminals and hotels are common pick-up points).
- If travelling with children, have a responsible adult ready to help them into provided overalls and helmets at arrival.
Meet at base: 4x4 Adventures Iceland — check-in & safety briefing
Arrive at the operator's base for check-in, sign safety forms, and receive overalls, gloves and helmets. The guide covers driving rules, passenger safety and what to expect on the route.
Tips from local experts:
- If you are meeting on location, arrive 10–15 minutes before the listed start time to complete paperwork and get fitted for gear.
- Wear warm, layered clothing and sturdy footwear under the supplied overalls; temperatures and wind on the lava are cooler than in town.
- Bring any required ID or the driver's licence if you plan to drive (minimum driving age to drive an ATV is 17).
ATV tour across lava fields with a stop at the new craters
Guided off-road ATV route across fresh and older lava fields on the Reykjanes Peninsula. The guide will stop at safe viewing points close to the recently formed craters for photos and orientation about the eruption history.
Tips from local experts:
- Passengers under 18 must ride with a guardian; children under 6 are not permitted — plan seating and pairing in advance.
- Keep cameras and phones secure; the guide will indicate safe moments to step off the ATV for photos at viewing stops.
- Expect uneven, rocky ground at stops; use provided non-slip gloves and overalls and follow the guide's instructions for safe dismounting.
Return to base and equipment return
Drive back to the Grindavík base, remove and return provided gear, debrief with the guide and confirm drop-off arrangements if requested.
Tips from local experts:
- Allow a few minutes after return to remove overalls and dry off if wet — the operator provides facilities for changing.
- If you requested drop-off (Blue Lagoon or Keflavík), confirm the exact drop-off time and location with the guide before leaving the base.
- Collect any personal items from your overalls and ATVs (phones, glasses, hats) before you depart the facility.
