Itinerary
Day 1
Afternoon beach and snorkeling experience timed for cruise passengers who return to ship for lunch and change into beach attire.
Black Sand Beaches, Sunbathing/Snorkeling, Turtle Watching
Meet for an afternoon (2:00–5:00 PM) coastline tour that includes a seaside Japanese garden, a hidden waterfall-fed beach, and visits to Hilo-area black sand beaches. Guests may snorkel using the tour's optional (complimentary) snorkel gear, swim among tropical fish, and visit a cove frequented by sea turtles. Complimentary water bottles are provided. The tour is paced for families and cruise passengers returning to ship for lunch beforehand.
Tips from local experts:
- Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a towel, and water shoes — black sand can be hot and some beach access is over uneven lava or rock.
- Pack a lightweight change of clothes and swim diapers if traveling with young children; there will be short stops and minimal walking between shores.
- If you plan to snorkel, put on gear at the beach edge and enter slowly; follow staff guidance to keep distance from resting sea turtles and avoid touching coral.
