Itinerary
Day 1
A single full day exploring the Black Hills highlights with frequent stops for short walks, photos, wildlife viewing, and a relaxed lunch in Custer.
Private Pickup · 8:00 AM
Your guide (former National Park Ranger) meets you outside your lodging in Rapid City or central Black Hills and escorts you into the private Jeep Wagoneer to begin the scenic drive toward the hills.
Tips from local experts:
- Confirm the exact pickup spot the evening before; guides typically request to meet outside the main lodging entrance.
- Have a light jacket available—mornings in the Black Hills can be cool even in summer.
- Keep probable breakfast items or snacks handy for kids; complimentary bottled water and snacks are provided in the vehicle.
Iron Mountain Road
Drive the scenic Iron Mountain Road (US‑16A) with its pigtail bridges, granite tunnels, and framed views of Mount Rushmore. Stop for photos at one or two lookout points.
Tips from local experts:
- Stay with the guide and vehicle at roadside photo stops; shoulders can be narrow and traffic moves quickly.
- Have cameras ready for the tunnel-framed views; bursts help capture the sudden reveal of Mount Rushmore.
- Children should remain seated or have a responsible adult when stepping out for photos; watch for loose gravel near pullouts.
Mount Rushmore National Memorial ~ 9:00 AM
Arrive at Mount Rushmore in the softer morning light. Walk parts of the Presidential Trail, visit the Sculptor’s Studio, and hear stories about the carving from your ranger guide. Optional quick treat: try Jefferson’s ice cream recipe if available on site.
Tips from local experts:
- Bring a stroller or carrier for younger kids; the Presidential Trail includes steps and uneven surfaces (not wheelchair accessible).
- Restrooms and water fountains are available at the visitor area before the trail; use them prior to short trail walks.
- Keep a small daypack for sun protection (hat, sunscreen) and a zip-closed pocket for any small souvenirs.
Needles Highway
Continue the drive along Needles Highway (SD‑87). Enjoy narrow rock tunnels, soaring granite spires, and scenic pullouts for short photo stops and viewing opportunities.
Tips from local experts:
- Expect narrow lanes and occasional one‑lane tunnels; follow your guide’s instructions for safe stops and crossings.
- Motion-sensitive kids may prefer to sit in forward-facing seats during winding sections; there are calm pullouts for stretching.
- Carry a small hand sanitizer; restroom options are limited between major stops.
Sylvan Lake
Short walk along the shoreline of Sylvan Lake among dramatic granite formations. Time for family photos and a gentle stroll on groomed paths.
Tips from local experts:
- Paths around the lake are uneven in places—wear closed-toe shoes and supervise small children near rock edges.
- There are picnic areas if you prefer to eat here; check with the guide about timing if you’d like a quick lakeside snack.
- Be mindful of posted signs and stay off fragile rock features to protect the area and for safety.
Lunch in Custer
Pause for a relaxed lunch in the town of Custer. Guests choose their own meal at a locally owned restaurant or take food to go for a nearby picnic.
Tips from local experts:
- Ask the guide for family-friendly restaurant suggestions with kids’ menus and high chairs if needed.
- Allow 10–15 minutes extra for ordering when arriving as a group; peak lunch times can be busy in summer.
- If you prefer a picnic, buy perishables last and keep them in a cooler bag to avoid spoilage in warm weather.
Crazy Horse Memorial ~ 1:30 PM
Visit Crazy Horse Memorial and the Indian Museum of North America. Learn about the memorial’s history, Lakota culture, and contemporary Native American artists and traditions.
Tips from local experts:
- Strollers are workable around the main visitor complex, but some viewing areas include stairs—plan accordingly for small children.
- Museum restrooms and family facilities are available in the visitor center; use them before short exhibits or lookout walks.
- Observe signage and stay behind railings at overlooks; viewing platforms can be windy and exposed.
Mount Coolidge
If gate access and timing allow, ascend Mount Coolidge for panoramic views across the Black Hills and prairie; short stop for photos and interpretation from your guide.
Tips from local experts:
- Access to Mount Coolidge can be seasonal; the guide will confirm road/gate status the day of the tour.
- The lookout area is exposed—bring a windbreaker and keep young children close near the viewpoint edges.
- This stop may be brief; if children need leg-stretching, allow them a short supervised walk around the lookout.
Wildlife Loop Road – Custer State Park
Drive the Wildlife Loop Road through Custer State Park for wildlife viewing — bison, pronghorn, prairie dogs, burros and more. Expect slow driving with stops for sightings and photos from the vehicle.
Tips from local experts:
- Do not approach or feed wildlife; remain in the vehicle at close bison sightings and follow your guide’s safety instructions.
- Keep camera zooms ready; many animals are best photographed from a distance for safety and to avoid disturbing them.
- Bring binoculars for kids—they help spot prairie dogs and distant pronghorn without leaving the vehicle.
Return Journey
Drive back through the Black Hills, passing the historic State Game Lodge (Calvin Coolidge’s “Summer White House” commute) and return to your lodging in Rapid City or central Black Hills.
Tips from local experts:
- Expect a relaxed return with a short buffer for restroom stops if needed before final drop-off.
- If your group needs any additional stops (restroom, quick snack), tell the guide early so timing can be adjusted.
- Plan for a 15–45 minute transfer back to Rapid City depending on your lodging location in the central Black Hills.
