Itinerary
Day 1
Evening guided canoe tour along the Dane (Dangė) River through Klaipėda's old town. Total duration 1 hour 45 minutes. Sample start time shown at 21:00 (selected from available start times).
Before we begin
Meet at the Klaipėda rowing centre for introductions, safety briefing and paddling instructions from an experienced instructor. Fit PFDs and distribute dry bags and paddles before moving to the water.
Tips from local experts:
- Arrive 10 minutes early to the Klaipėda rowing centre at 8 Gluosnių skersgatvis to complete safety briefing and equipment fitting.
- Wear quick-dry layers and closed-toe shoes that can get wet; evening on the river can be cooler than on land.
- Leave valuables in your hotel or use the provided dry bag; a small phone in a waterproof pouch is fine for photos.
First strokes
Short on-land practice of basic canoe strokes followed by a short, calm paddle section near the launch point (10–20 minutes) so guests get used to the canoe and paddling together.
Tips from local experts:
- Practice one- and two-person forward strokes on shore so both paddlers know their roles when you push off.
- If you or your partner have limited canoe experience, tell the guide — they will pair participants to balance skill levels.
- Hold cameras securely or use wrist straps; avoid sudden movements while stabilising in the canoe during the first minutes on water.
Time for fire torches to be lighten!
Once guests are comfortable, guides light the hand-held fire-flamed torches and the group paddles toward the city centre. First stop is the old city fortification area commonly referred to as Jonas Hill (short landing/stop for viewing and photos).
Tips from local experts:
- Keep a safe distance from the lit torches and follow the guide’s instructions when the torches are handled or passed between crew.
- Expect low light—use torchlight on the path to any short shore stops; avoid using phone flash which can disturb others' night photos.
- If you are sensitive to smoke, tell the guide before torches are lit so they can position you upwind when possible.
River Dangė
Paddle into the heart of the old port area (Memel) along the River Dangė. Pause to view the Meridianas sailing ship and the surrounding historic quay area from the water.
Tips from local experts:
- When taking photos of the Meridianas from the canoe, keep the boat steady and ask the guide to pause in calm water for a short, stable photo stop.
- Be mindful of river traffic and follow the guide’s positioning requests — the guide will manage crossings and narrow sections.
- Keep knees low in the canoe and hand luggage stored inside the dry bag during manoeuvres near other moored vessels.
Old embankments
Continue along the illuminated embankments and historical buildings of Klaipėda’s old town toward the Castle Bridge. Turn the route beneath the bridge and enjoy photos of the waterfront before returning to the launch.
Tips from local experts:
- This is the best moment for night photos of the old embankments; steady the canoe and ask the guide to hold position for a brief photo window.
- Expect a slightly longer paddle while turning near Castle Bridge; store your camera when the guide signals ‘active paddling’ to stabilise the canoe.
- After the turnaround, relax and layer up if needed—wind over the river can feel cooler than onshore even in summer evenings.
