Itinerary
Day 1
Start at the Battleship USS IOWA for the 2-hour self-guided General Access Pass (interior + exterior), followed by a short lunch and beach time. Pace is family-friendly with stroller/limited-mobility suggestions.
Arrive & Self-Guided Tour — Battleship USS IOWA (General Access Pass)
Meet at the Battleship USS IOWA Museum for your General Access Pass. This self-guided experience includes interior and exterior access across multiple decks following a one-directional route. Use the Battleship IOWA app on your device for award-winning interpretive audio; kids can do Vicky the Dog’s scavenger hunt while adults explore the Officers' Wardroom, Admirals Bridge, navigation spaces and crew quarters. Plan ~2 hours to view exhibit spaces. Note: transitions between decks use ladders/stairs — main deck offers limited-mobility access.
Tips from local experts:
- Accessibility & strollers: The main deck and much of the dock area are stroller- and wheelchair-friendly — however, many deck transitions are by ladders (naval stairs). If you have an infant, bring a front-facing carrier; the museum recommends carriers for laddered areas.
- Kid engagement: Download the free Battleship IOWA app before arrival and pick up the printed Vicky the Dog scavenger-hunt sheet at admissions — it keeps younger kids focused and turns exhibits into a game.
- Comfort & logistics: The waterfront is cooler in the morning and warms later — bring a light layer for kids. Restrooms and changing facilities are available near the admissions area; there is paid parking nearby (parking fees are not included).
Family Lunch — San Pedro Fish Market & Restaurant
Short walk / drive from the IOWA to San Pedro Fish Market for a relaxed family lunch. The venue is lively with large communal tables and a menu that includes kid-friendly options (fried fish, fish & chips, clam chowder). Take advantage of quick counter service if you have eager little ones.
Tips from local experts:
- Seating & kids: Ask for a corner or high-chair when ordering — the Fish Market is large and can seat families; counter lines move quickly if kids are getting antsy.
- Menu hacks: For younger kids try the burger or fish & chips; older kids usually love the clam chowder in a bread bowl. Bring hand wipes and bibs — seafood can be messy but is worth it.
- Parking & timing: Weekends get busy — go right at midday (12:15) after the IOWA tour to avoid the worst lines; remember parking near the waterfront may have a fee not covered by the activity.
Beach Play & Wind-Down — Cabrillo Beach
Drive or short ride to nearby Cabrillo Beach for sand play, tidepool spotting, and a relaxed family wind-down. This is a stroller-friendly beach area with picnic tables, restrooms, and lifeguard presence during daytime hours — perfect for kids to run off steam after the museum.
Tips from local experts:
- Stroller path & facilities: The Cabrillo Beach area has paved walkways and picnic zones usable with strollers; locate the main restroom/parking area for diaper changes and quick snacks.
- Tidepooling: Check tide times before you go if you want to see tidepools — spring low tides often reveal small sea life that excites children. Keep a safe distance and supervise closely.
- Sun & wind: Spring afternoons can be sunny but breezy — bring a windbreaker and sun protection; pack a small blanket and snacks in a tote for a comfortable break on the sand.
