- All core materials provided: artificial flowers, glue gun, wire cutter
Itinerary
Day 1
Meet at the workshop location in Nishi Ward for a calm, seated 60-minute Shimenawa wreath workshop. Suitable for guests preferring step-free access and a low-paced, culturally focused activity.
Meet & settle — workshop introduction
Arrival, seating, short introduction to Ikebana aesthetics and the cultural meaning of Shimenawa. Instructor covers safety using the glue gun and the sequence for assembling the wreath.
Tips from local experts:
- Arrive 10 minutes before the start time to settle in comfortably; seating is arranged on step-free level but space is limited.
- Wear clothes you don’t mind glue on; a small apron is recommended for steady hands and safety with the glue gun.
- If you have limited hand strength, tell the instructor on arrival — they will assist with cutting or holding materials.
Hands-on Shimenawa wreath assembly
Guided step-by-step assembly of a Shimenawa-style wreath using rice-straw style base, artificial pine/flowers, red elements, gold accents, mizuhiki cords. Instructor demonstrates each step; participants assemble and decorate their own wreath.
Tips from local experts:
- Work at an easy pace—ask the instructor to demonstrate glue application on a scrap piece before using it on your wreath.
- Keep personal items off the workspace; there is limited table space and small decorative pieces can be misplaced.
- If standing is uncomfortable, request a seated station — all core tasks (wrapping, gluing, arranging) can be completed seated.
Finishing touches & photos
Final adjustments, short explanation of display and care for a Shimenawa wreath, group photo and time to pack the finished wreath to take home.
Tips from local experts:
- Allow 5–10 minutes drying time for glue joins before packing; keep wreath flat when transporting.
- Ask the instructor how to place the wreath at an entrance (height and direction) if intended for New Year display.
- If you need assistance carrying the wreath to a taxi or transport, request help from staff before leaving.
