Itinerary
Day 1
Full-day guided coach trip from Times Square to Washington, D.C. — accessible routing with frequent rest stops and short walking segments.
Meet & board at The Manhattan at Times Square Hotel (meeting point)
Gather in the hotel lobby, check in with the guide, store small mobility aids on the coach. The guide will confirm the return time and hand out a simple map.
Tips from local experts:
- Arrive 10–15 minutes early so boarding is calm; staff can assist with luggage or mobility aids.
- The hotel has step-free access from the 7th Ave entrance — ask staff to point out the elevator to the lobby.
- Bring a light jacket; buses may be air-conditioned and mornings can be cool in April.
Coach transfer: New York → Washington, D.C. (with comfort stop)
Relax on an air-conditioned coach with reserved seating. The driver will schedule a midway restroom and stretch stop (short, seated-friendly rest area).
Tips from local experts:
- Pick a seat near the front for easier boarding and disembarking; ask the guide for help if you use a cane or walker.
- Use the restroom during the scheduled comfort stop—coach restrooms are small; the driver will use a highway rest area with accessible facilities when available.
- Keep medications and a refillable water bottle in your day bag for easy access during the ride.
Arlington National Cemetery — Tomb of the Unknowns & overview
Guided short visit to Arlington National Cemetery focusing on key gravesites, the Tomb of the Unknowns and a respectful overview of the grounds.
Tips from local experts:
- Drop-off is near the welcome center; the main Tomb area has level pathways and benches — request a closest-drop if mobility is limited.
- There are accessible restrooms at the Visitor Education Center; staff can provide information on accessible routes.
- Dress in layers and wear comfortable shoes; the ground can be uneven in places, so use the coach for as many drop-offs/pickups as possible.
Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima) — short photo stop
A quick stop for photos and a short accessible viewpoint of the iconic Iwo Jima memorial located above Arlington.
Tips from local experts:
- The memorial plaza is mostly level and has seating at the perimeter — perfect for a brief, comfortable visit.
- There is a paved access path from the coach drop-off; avoid grassy slopes if mobility is an issue.
- The site is open-air — bring a hat or light rain layer if needed; the guide times this stop to minimize walking.
Transfer to the National Mall area (short coach ride)
Coach transfers across the river to the National Mall. The guide will point out drop-off locations and accessible routes for the next stops.
Tips from local experts:
- Ask the guide for the closest coach drop to minimize walking — many Smithsonian stops have nearby bus drop zones.
- If you need a slower pace, request to be grouped with guests who want less walking; guides typically accommodate.
- Keep your walking aid within reach; loading and unloading at the curb is made easy by the guide and driver.
White House photo stop (view & short walk)
Coach drop near Lafayette Square for a comfortable, short-view photo opportunity of the White House exterior. No interior tours are included.
Tips from local experts:
- Access is via paved sidewalks around Lafayette Square — mostly step-free with benches nearby for resting.
- Security fences are present; the guide will position the coach for the easiest short walk to the best photo angle.
- Restroom options are limited at outdoor stops—use museum restrooms later; carry a small tissues/sanitizer kit.
Lunch on the National Mall — choose an accessible Smithsonian café
One-hour lunch break. Recommend the accessible cafeterias inside the nearby Smithsonian museums (wide seating, elevators). You may also bring a packed lunch to a nearby bench or shaded area.
Tips from local experts:
- We recommend the cafeteria at the National Museum of American History — elevators and wide aisles make it senior-friendly.
- If you prefer minimal walking, ask the guide to drop you at the museum entrance closest to the cafeteria elevator.
- Carry a list of any dietary restrictions; most Smithsonian cafes can accommodate common allergies and will mark items.
National Air and Space Museum — guided free time (Smithsonian)
Allocated free time inside the museum to see highlights (Apollo 11, historic aircraft). Elevators and benches are abundant — good rest opportunities.
Tips from local experts:
- Use the museum elevators and accessible entrances — staff can point you to the least-crowded routes on arrival.
- Benches are located throughout major galleries; plan to rest every 20–30 minutes to avoid fatigue.
- If you prefer quieter galleries, head to the aircraft hangars on the upper floors first; they tend to be less crowded mid-afternoon.
Short transfer to the Lincoln Memorial area
Coach moves guests closer to the western end of the Mall for the Lincoln and WWII Memorials; short disembark and level walk to viewpoints.
Tips from local experts:
- Request coach drop as close as possible to the paths leading to the memorial — it minimizes walking on uneven surfaces.
- There are paved ramps and accessible routes up to the WWII and Lincoln Memorial viewing areas.
- If stairs are visible, ask the guide for the ramped path; staff and volunteers often assist guests with mobility needs.
Lincoln Memorial & WWII Memorial — relaxed visit and photos
Gentle-paced visit to both memorials. Benches and shaded spots are available to sit and enjoy the view of the Reflecting Pool.
Tips from local experts:
- The Lincoln Memorial has ramps for step-free access to the plaza; if you prefer to avoid the full staircase, use the east ramps.
- Rest near the Reflecting Pool benches — great spot for photos without climbing steps.
- War Memorial paths are paved and level; the guide will coordinate timing to reduce crowd exposure.
Coach transfer toward the United States Capitol (exterior stop)
Short coach ride to the Capitol area for an exterior photo stop and orientation. Interior tours are possible only with advance booking and are not included.
Tips from local experts:
- The Capitol grounds offer paved walkways and stone benches — helpful for short rests during the exterior viewing.
- If you'd like an indoor restroom, the guide can point to the nearest accessible visitor facility before the photo stop.
- Keep valuables secure; the guide will arrange a brief window for photos so you can sit and rest while others take pictures.
United States Capitol — exterior viewing & group photo
Exterior viewing of the Capitol and quick group photo. The guide will summarize the building's history and point out accessible entrance routes for those who want to return later independently.
Tips from local experts:
- The East and West front areas are mostly level; follow the paved sidewalks to minimize steps.
- Capitol Police checkpoints are present — allow a few extra minutes but you will remain with the group to minimize standing time.
- If anyone prefers to sit while photos are taken, there are benches near the reflecting pools on the east front.
Board coach and depart Washington, D.C. for New York
Relax on the return coach; there will be at least one brief restroom/stretch stop en route. Expect city arrival in the evening.
Tips from local experts:
- Store any small mobility aids where the driver can access them at stops; request assistance from the guide when re-boarding.
- Take this time to hydrate and snack lightly — avoid heavy meals right before a long sit if you have digestion issues.
- If you need a front-row seat for an easier exit on arrival, tell the guide before boarding.
Drop-off at The Manhattan at Times Square Hotel (end of tour)
Return to the original meeting point in Times Square. Guide will say goodbye and confirm any follow-up details.
Tips from local experts:
- If you need assistance with final steps or luggage, ask the guide to arrange help from hotel staff or a porter.
- Evening in April can be cool — have a light layer handy when you disembark.
- Confirm pick-up info for any connecting plans before parting ways with the guide.
