Itinerary
Day 1
Private full-day tour starting with hotel pickup in Quito. The schedule below shows visit windows; transit times between stops are included. The guide will confirm exact hotel pickup time the evening before (standard pickup from centrally located Quito hotels at 08:00).
Quitsato Sundial (Quitsato Solar Museum)
Visit the Quitsato Sundial to learn about the indigenous relationship to the sun and the equator. Short guided stop to see the solar clock and interpretive displays. (Alternative: Cuicocha lagoon if you prefer not to visit the sundial — entrance fees are not included.)
Tips from local experts:
- Have your passport or ID handy for verification at pickup and if requested at the site.
- This stop is at high altitude and involves short outdoor walking; move at a steady pace and inform the guide if you need more frequent rests.
- Restroom options are limited near the site—use hotel facilities in Quito before departure or ask the guide for the nearest stop.
Miralago (viewpoint)
Short scenic stop at Miralago for photos of Imbabura Volcano and Laguna San Pablo. Enjoy traditional bizcochos served with dulce de leche and local cheese while the guide gives an introduction to Otavalo culture.
Tips from local experts:
- Bring a light jacket — wind is common at the viewpoint even on sunny days.
- Ask the guide for a seat or shaded spot if standing for photos is difficult.
- If you have dietary restrictions, inform the guide before sampling local snacks.
San Pablo Lake (Laguna de San Pablo) & Ancient Weavers’ Route
Brief visit to Laguna de San Pablo at the foot of Imbabura Volcano for photos and calm views. Then follow part of the Ancient Weavers’ Route to visit local Kichwa Otavalo homes and workshops to observe traditional weaving techniques.
Tips from local experts:
- Wear comfortable, closed shoes for short walks around the lake and village pathways.
- Visits to private workshops are usually short and seated—ask for a chair if needed; let the guide know if you prefer to skip stairs.
- If you plan to purchase textiles, ask the artisan about fiber content and washing instructions to care for delicate pieces.
Peguche Waterfall (Cascada de Peguche)
Walk a forested trail to the 18-meter Peguche waterfall. Learn about the site's ancestral and cultural importance to local indigenous communities during the visit.
Tips from local experts:
- Trail surfaces can be uneven and slightly slippery—use a walking stick if helpful and wear shoes with good grip.
- There are shaded resting points along the trail; take frequent short rests to avoid overexertion.
- If you have limited mobility, notify the guide in advance so the visit can be paced or an alternative viewpoint arranged.
Otavalo Market (Plaza de los Ponchos)
Explore Plaza de los Ponchos—the region's main handicraft market—where Otavalo textiles, jewelry, and artisanal goods are available. If your visit is on Saturday, the larger local market atmosphere will be experienced.
Tips from local experts:
- Keep personal items secure and use a cross-body bag; crowds can form in popular aisles.
- Negotiate politely when purchasing—sellers expect friendly bargaining; ask for seating if you need a rest while companions shop.
- Plan for a light snack or lunch break here; the guide can recommend calm cafés or restaurants with seating suitable for seniors.
