Itinerary
Day 1
Start in Praia with hotel pickup, visit São Lourenço dos Órgãos for a family cooking workshop, explore Assomada Market (on market days), stop for photos at Serra Malagueta, then relax and have lunch at Tarrafal. Return to Praia via the east coast and drop off at your accommodation.
Hotel pick-up in Praia
Pickup from your accommodation in Praia. Meet the guide and group, then depart toward the interior of Santiago.
Tips from local experts:
- Have your accommodation address and room number ready for the driver; pickup windows may be staggered for different hotels.
- Bring a small daypack with sunscreen, a hat and a refillable water bottle for the day.
- If travelling with a stroller, collapse it for vehicle boarding; vehicles used are standard tour vans (not wheelchair-accessible).
Workshop with a local family (São Lourenço dos Órgãos)
Visit a local family in São Lourenço dos Órgãos to learn how to make and taste cuscuz and fidjós — a typical Cape Verdean breakfast prepared during a home workshop.
Tips from local experts:
- The workshop is held in a family home; wear comfortable clothing and remove shoes if requested.
- Bring wet wipes and a small towel for children — cooking activities can be messy.
- Inform the operator in advance of any food allergies or strong dietary restrictions.
Assomada: Explore its famous local Market
Short visit to Assomada to explore the town and its busy market (market visit occurs only on Wednesdays and Saturdays). Meet local vendors and see fresh produce and crafts.
Tips from local experts:
- Market days are Wednesdays and Saturdays — if your tour falls on another day you will still visit Assomada but the municipal market will be quieter.
- Carry small change in cash (Euros or local escudos) for small purchases; stalls commonly do not accept cards.
- Keep children close in the market; stalls and narrow aisles can get busy—use a child harness or hold hands where appropriate.
Serra Malagueta Natural Park: Photo stop
Short photo stop with viewpoints in Serra Malagueta Natural Park to admire the island landscape at higher elevation.
Tips from local experts:
- Temperatures are cooler at higher elevation; bring a light layer for children and seniors.
- Stay on marked viewpoints and follow your guide’s instructions — terrain near viewpoints can be uneven.
- If travelling with a stroller, plan to keep it in the vehicle; viewpoints typically have uneven ground and steps.
Tarrafal: Swim at Santiago's most beautiful beach
Free time to swim, relax under the palms, and have lunch at a local restaurant in Tarrafal (lunch not included).
Tips from local experts:
- Bring swimwear, sun protection and a towel; shade is available under palm trees but limited near the busiest beach areas.
- Lunch is typically paid in cash (Euros or local currency); credit cards are often not accepted—bring sufficient cash.
- Families with young children should supervise them in the water; beaches have gentle slopes but no lifeguard service guaranteed.
Praia: Hotel drop-off
Return drive along the east coast with photo stops at coastal viewpoints. Drop-off at your accommodation in Praia.
Tips from local experts:
- Allow a short buffer for photo stops along the east coast; exact drop-off time may vary slightly due to traffic.
- If your accommodation is not listed or is outside central Praia, confirm the exact drop-off address with the guide before the return journey.
- Keep any valuables or souvenirs gathered during the day on your person during transit for safety and convenience.
