Itinerary
Day 1
Start in Puerto Madryn with door-to-door pickup. The route follows the main visitor points inside Península Valdés, with time allocated for reserve entry, short walks at interpretative sites, wildlife viewing from viewpoints, a lunch stop, and time in Puerto Pirámides where boarding for whale-watching is optional.
Hotel Pickup
The tour begins with pick-up from your accommodation in Puerto Madryn. Drivers and guides will coordinate final pickup details after booking.
Tips from local experts:
- Have your accommodation name and room number ready for the driver; pickups are door-to-door across Puerto Madryn.
- Bring a small daypack (water, camera, light jacket) so you can board quickly.
- Expect the vehicle to be air-conditioned; dress in layers for outdoor stops.
Checkpoint El Desempeño
First stop to pay the entrance fee to the reserve and complete check-in formalities.
Tips from local experts:
- Carry cash (local currency) or check with your operator in advance for payment options for reserve entry.
- Keep personal ID handy; checkpoint staff may request passenger names for reserve records.
- Restroom facilities are limited here—use them before continuing to remote viewpoints.
Visitor Center Istmo Ameghino
Located on the narrowest part of the peninsula. Viewpoint over the two gulfs and Bird Island, interpretation rooms on flora and fauna, and a whale skeleton on display.
Tips from local experts:
- There is an interpretation centre with information panels—visit first for orientation and restroom access.
- Pick up a map or ask the guide about current wildlife sightings and safe viewpoints.
- Wear sun protection; the viewpoint is exposed with limited shade.
Punta Norte
Panoramic views and diverse wildlife viewing. Noted location where orcas perform intentional strandings (seasonal).
Tips from local experts:
- Bring binoculars and a telephoto lens for distant wildlife; maintain the guide’s recommended viewing distance.
- Follow the guide’s instructions—some areas are closed for wildlife protection and change by tide.
- Expect uneven ground; wear sturdy shoes and take water for the walk between viewpoints.
Punta Cantor (Lunch)
Lunch stop with viewpoints for elephant seal observation and a short flora interpretation trail. Possibility of spotting orcas depending on the tide (seasonal).
Tips from local experts:
- Bring a packed lunch or buy food if available in season; options are limited at remote sites.
- Carry a lightweight blanket or windbreaker—coastal winds can be strong during outdoor lunches.
- Keep a respectful distance from elephant seals; follow guide directions for safe viewing and photo opportunities.
Puerto Pirámides
The only populated area on the peninsula. Time in town for short walks and (optional) whale-watching boarding. Note: the standard whale-watching boat trip lasts 1 hour 30 minutes and is an optional extra; if taken, the operator will adjust the return time.
Tips from local experts:
- If you consider the optional whale-watching boat, bring seasickness medication in advance—the sea can be choppy.
- There are basic services in town (cafés, restrooms); mobile signal and card acceptance can be intermittent.
- If not boarding, use this time for shoreline viewing or to visit the small local information points.
Return to your hotel
After the day's visits we return to Puerto Madryn and drop you off at the same location as pickup.
Tips from local experts:
- Charge devices and collect belongings before boarding for the return trip; vehicle stops are limited on the way back.
- Inform the guide of any specific drop-off point within Puerto Madryn at the start of the tour to save time.
- Expect arrival at your accommodation around the scheduled end time; traffic and weather can affect exact arrival.
