Pick up in Praia
Guide and vehicle pick you up at your accommodation in Praia and begin the transfer toward São Domingos. Staff will confirm exact pickup location in advance.
Tips from local experts:
- Confirm your exact pickup address and a local phone number the evening before the tour.
- Wear layered clothing; mornings can be cool in higher elevations even if Praia is warm.
- Bring a small daypack with water, sunscreen, and sunglasses to keep items handy during the transfer.
viewpoint
Short stop at São Domingos to enjoy the landscape and take photos. A brief pause to stretch legs and enjoy the valley views.
Tips from local experts:
- Keep valuables secure; take photos quickly and be ready to reboard the vehicle at the agreed time.
- If it’s windy, step back from exposed edges — some viewpoints have uneven footing.
- Ask your guide about the visible landmarks and local geology for quick context on the landscape.
Rui Vaz Village
Stop at the Rui Vaz viewpoint for another panoramic vantage point and a short comfort break before continuing toward the hiking start.
Tips from local experts:
- There may be local vendors near the viewpoint — carry small change if you plan to buy snacks or water.
- Watch for loose gravel on village roads when walking to the viewpoint; wear sturdy shoes.
- Use this stop to adjust layers and refill water bottles before the hike; availability of services can be limited higher up.
Hiking starting point
Begin the guided hike toward Pico da Antónia from the trailhead. The guide leads the group up to the island’s highest point, with opportunities for photos and short interpretive stops about local flora and geology.
Tips from local experts:
- Wear closed-toe hiking shoes with grip — trails can be steep and uneven in places.
- Bring at least 1.5 liters of water per person and high-energy snacks for the hike; there are no services on the trail.
- Keep pace with the group and follow the guide’s safety instructions on narrow or exposed sections; plan a summit group photo and reconvene time.
