Itinerary

Day 1

Private, guided half-day walking tour. Hotel lobby pick-up in central Shanghai at the chosen start time (08:30 or 13:30). The guide uses public transport (metro or bus) and walking between stops. Total duration: 4 hours including transfers and short breaks. Tour order follows the guide’s curated route: The Bund → Nanjing Road East → Huaihai Middle Road → Xintiandi (Lane 181, Taicang Road).

The Bund (Waitan) — riverside promenade and historic façades

08:45 – 09:25 • 40m

Begin at the Bund to view Shanghai’s historic waterfront architecture — a mix of neoclassical, Art Deco and colonial-era buildings — and take photos of the skyline across the Huangpu River.

Zhongshan East 1st Rd, Huangpu, Shanghai, China

Tips from local experts:

  • Bring a lightweight jacket in autumn evenings — river breezes can be cool during golden hour.
  • For unobstructed photos, walk east along Zhongshan East 1st Rd toward the promenade rather than staying at the road edge.
  • If you want a riverside coffee, ask your guide for a nearby café with outdoor seating in Xintiandi later in the tour.

Nanjing Road East — pedestrian shopping street

09:40 – 10:20 • 40m

Walk part of Nanjing Road East to experience Shanghai’s busiest shopping artery: department stores, flagship shops and street-front displays. The guide will highlight historic storefronts and the street’s development.

Nanjing East Road, Huangpu District, Shanghai, China

Tips from local experts:

  • Keep personal items secure; Nanjing Road can be crowded mid-morning and in the afternoon.
  • If you plan to try local snacks, save them for short breaks — the guide will recommend popular stalls that are quick and safe.
  • Use the underground passages to cross busy intersections quickly — your guide will point out the nearest entrance.

Huaihai Middle Road — tree-lined avenue and boutiques

10:40 – 11:20 • 40m

Stroll Huaihai Middle Road to see the European-influenced architecture, boutique shops and tree-lined sidewalks that typify Shanghai’s fashionable districts.

Huaihai Middle Road, Huangpu District, Shanghai, China

Tips from local experts:

  • Wear comfortable shoes — Huaihai Road is best explored on foot across several short blocks.
  • If you prefer quieter side streets, ask the guide to detour into adjacent lanes with smaller boutique shops and cafés.
  • Look for the district’s distinctive street signs and tree-lined avenues to orient yourself; the guide will point out architectural highlights.

Xintiandi (Lane 181, Taicang Road) — restored shikumen lanes and cafés

11:40 – 12:20 • 40m

Finish in Xintiandi to see restored shikumen lane houses converted into cafés, restaurants and shops. Good spot for a relaxed coffee or light snack before the guide returns you to your hotel.

Lane 181, Taicang Road, Huangpu District, Shanghai, China

Tips from local experts:

  • If you want a quiet moment, tell the guide you prefer a café with outdoor seating — Xintiandi has options that are more intimate than the main lane.
  • Many restaurants in Xintiandi open for lunch and afternoon tea; if you plan to stay after the tour, ask the guide for table recommendations.
  • Watch for uneven pavements in restored lanes; the area is not rated as stroller- or wheelchair-accessible.
