Itinerary
Day 1
Meet at Place du 9 Avril 1947 → Kasbah (Place de la Kasbah)
Meet at Place du 9 Avril 1947; the guide will introduce the route and lead a short uphill walk into Tangier’s historic Kasbah overlooking the ocean. Expect Moorish architecture, narrow alleys and panoramic viewpoints.
Tips from local experts:
- Meet at Place du 9 Avril 1947 a few minutes early; the guide will display a sign with the lead traveler’s name.
- Wear comfortable, grippy shoes — the Kasbah approaches include uneven stone steps and short steep stretches.
- Carry a light layer and sunglasses — mornings in April can be cool near shaded alleys but sunny at the viewpoint.
Musée de la Kasbah (Museum of the Kasbah)
Visit the Kasbah Museum inside a former sultan’s palace to see Moroccan art, decorative features and Andalusian architecture (museum entry is included).
Tips from local experts:
- Bring a modest shoulder-covering for indoor museum spaces where conservative dress is appreciated.
- Allow the guide time to present key artifacts—photo-taking is usually allowed but check signage for restricted exhibits.
- Restrooms at the museum can be limited; use them on arrival as the rest of the route is on foot.
Tangier Old Medina (stroll through souks and alleys)
A guided stroll through the Old Medina’s maze of narrow streets and souks, highlighting crafts, architecture and everyday life.
Tips from local experts:
- Keep small change handy for small purchases; many stall-owners expect cash and small bills.
- Keep backpacks in front and bags zipped — the medina lanes are busy and close for personal items.
- If you wish to browse shops, tell the guide so they can steer to quieter lanes where browsing is easier for couples.
Petit Socco — coffee or tea break
Pause at the historic Petit Socco square for coffee or tea (included). The square has been a cultural meeting point for writers and locals for generations.
Tips from local experts:
- Try mint tea served in a small glass — it’s included and a local specialty; ask for less sugar if preferred.
- Request a seat with a view of the square if you prefer a quieter spot; terraces can fill quickly during peak times.
- If you want a photo of the two of you, ask the guide to help — they often assist with quick couple photos at this stop.
American Legation Museum
Visit the American Legation Museum to learn about U.S.–Morocco diplomatic history and local cultural exchanges.
Tips from local experts:
- Present any requested identification if needed for entry; the guide will handle group admission where applicable.
- The museum galleries are compact — speak with the guide about specific objects you want more detail on.
- Photography rules can vary by room; follow signage or the guide’s directions to avoid restricted areas.
Rue Siaghine (historic street walk)
Walk along Rue Siaghine to see colonial-era facades, local shops and cafes reflecting Tangier’s layered past.
Tips from local experts:
- This street is narrow and pedestrian; step aside for local foot traffic and small delivery carts.
- If you see a handicraft or souvenir you like, negotiate politely — small bargaining is normal in medina shops.
- Keep bottles of water handy; short stretches of sun-exposed pavement can feel warm in midday.
Musée Dar Niaba
Short visit to Musée Dar Niaba to view displays of diplomatic history, manuscripts and Moroccan art tied to Tangier’s past.
Tips from local experts:
- Ask the guide to point out specific manuscripts or exhibits of interest—labels are often in French and Arabic.
- The museum is compact; keep belongings close and move as a small group to avoid blocking exhibits.
- If you need a moment out of the gallery, the guide can suggest a nearby quiet café for a five-minute pause.
Pl. du 9 Avril 1947 (historic square)
Stop at Place du 9 Avril 1947 where Sultan Mohammed V gave his historic speech supporting independence—an important civic landmark.
Tips from local experts:
- This is the meeting point for the tour; if you need pickup, confirm with the operator in advance.
- The square is open-air; wear sun protection during sunny spells and use the shaded benches for resting.
- Use this stop for a quick recap with your guide about any questions you have on Tangier’s modern history.
Mendoubia Garden (final stop and calm finish)
Conclude the walk in Mendoubia Garden — a peaceful green space with century-old trees and fountains. Time to relax, ask final questions and finish the tour.
Tips from local experts:
- Use the garden benches to sit and rest while the guide summarizes recommendations for the rest of your day.
- If you’d like a private photo together under the trees, ask the guide for a quick, unobtrusive spot away from crowds.
- Keep an eye on personal items — public gardens are open and a relaxed environment but stay together as a couple.
