Itinerary
Day 1
Meet at Charlottenlund aktivitets- og friluftspark for a 1 hr 45 min guided family session of sledding, miniski, lasso throwing and a cozy bonfire.
Meetup point
Meet at the park entrance by a small brown house. Your host will greet the group, distribute equipment and give a short safety overview.
Tips from local experts:
- Arrive 5–10 minutes early to get outfitted and avoid delaying the group.
- There is limited shelter at the meeting point—wear waterproof outer layers while waiting.
- If you drive, park in the designated lot at Charlottenlund aktivitets- og friluftspark and note the car registration rules for Tromsø municipal lots.
Sami lasso throwing
Practice the Sami art of lasso throwing using real reindeer antlers under instructor guidance. Safety briefing included.
Tips from local experts:
- Wear gloves with good dexterity so you can feel the rope but keep hands warm.
- Children should be supervised closely; hosts will give age-appropriate guidance and keep safe distances.
- Stand on flat ground when trying throws and follow the instructor’s marked safety lines.
Sledding in the snow
Use different toboggans and race down gentle slopes supervised by your guide. Activities scaled for children and adults.
Tips from local experts:
- Use the provided helmets for young children and anyone who requests one.
- Clear, packed snow is best—if icy, guides may adjust technique; follow their instructions for safe runs.
- Bring a dry bag for phones and cameras; your host can take photos from a safe distance if you'd prefer.
Miniski
Try miniskis on the snow—no special footwear required. The guide demonstrates basics and helps participants practice.
Tips from local experts:
- Wear warm, waterproof trousers and layered socks; miniskis work best with snug but comfortable boots.
- Start on a gentle slope and only progress when the instructor confirms you're stable.
- Keep a short break between runs to warm hands and check children for cold fingers or toes.
Bonfire camp
Relax by a crackling fire, wrapped in soft reindeer hides. Enjoy Norwegian hot drinks (tea, coffee, hot chocolate), snacks and toasted marshmallows.
Tips from local experts:
- Huddling under the reindeer hides can get warm—remove outer gloves briefly to avoid overheating.
- If anyone in your family has nut allergies or dietary restrictions, tell the host at meetup so snacks can be managed.
- There are no permanent toilets at the camp—use facilities before leaving the park entrance if needed.
Snowman
If snow conditions allow, build a snowman (or snow creations) with the family. The host provides simple tools and props.
Tips from local experts:
- Short activity—use it as a cool-down after the bonfire; keep gloves available for hands-on building.
- Let kids lead the creative parts and use clothing or small items from your daypack for eyes or accessories.
- If coastal winds pick up, build snow structures on the lee side of terrain to avoid drifting snow.

Why this experience
Your family is wrapped in reindeer hides, sitting by a bonfire in the Arctic, and your kids are throwing lassoes at reindeer antlers while you sip hot drinks and laugh. This one-hour adventure at Charlottenlund Aktivity- og Friluftspark combines everything that makes Arctic winter magical without requiring your family to sit still — sledding, miniskis, lasso throwing (a genuine Sami skill), snowman building, and that moment when you realize your kids aren't thinking about screens because they're too busy learning to throw a rope like a herder. The guide makes every activity feel like play, and the bonfire at the end is warm enough to melt even the coldest toes and the most skeptical teenagers. You're building memories that don't fade when the snow melts.
This is winter the way kids actually want to experience it.
Before you go
- Best time: Winter (November to March) — snow is guaranteed, and the Arctic activities feel authentic. Expect temperatures around -5 to -12°C. Dress warmly and in layers.
- Budget: Check the booking widget for current tour pricing. This is mid-range Arctic activity — includes all equipment, instruction, and refreshments.
- Difficulty: Easy — designed for families. No skiing experience needed. Activities are activity-based play, not athletic achievement.
- What to bring: Warm snowsuit or heavy winter coat, thermal gloves, wool socks, warm hat, waterproof pants and jacket, thermal layers underneath. Bring a camera to capture your kids throwing lassoes.
- Getting there: Charlottenlund Aktivity- og Friluftspark is about 15 minutes from central Tromsø. Your operator can arrange transport or provide directions.
- Accessibility: Most activities are accessible — sledding, lasso throwing, and snowman building don't require extensive hiking or climbing. Let your guide know about any mobility considerations so they can adjust activities.
Frequently asked questions
Do kids need skiing experience to do miniskis? No — miniskis are simpler than full skis and the guide teaches everyone from scratch in a flat, safe area. Kids usually pick it up within minutes and think it's hilarious.
Is lasso throwing safe for young kids? Completely — the guide teaches proper technique, the rope is soft, and the reindeer antlers are stationary practice targets, not live reindeer. Even young kids (age 5+) can learn the basic throw with guidance.
What if it's really cold? The guide adjusts activity intensity based on weather. The bonfire and reindeer hides are always part of the experience, so there's always a warm break. Proper clothing matters more than the temperature.
How old do kids need to be? The tour works for kids ages 4 and up. Younger toddlers can participate in slower-paced activities and the bonfire portion, though they may need extra supervision during sledding and miniskis.
Can we bring our own sledges? No — all equipment is provided and suited to the activity level. The sleds used are safe and designed for the terrain.
