Itinerary
Day 1
Full private glacier adventure at Sólheimajökull with safety briefing, guided glacier walk and an introduction to ice climbing. Total duration 4 h 30 min.
Meet at Sólheimajökull parking — check-in & safety briefing
Meet your guide at the Sólheimajökull parking area for check-in, a safety briefing, route overview, and gear fitting. Guides will fit helmets, crampons and harnesses and cover basic rope and crampon techniques before leaving the parking area.
Tips from local experts:
- Arrive 10 minutes early to allow time for check-in and any last-minute paperwork.
- Wear warm, waterproof outer layers and sturdy base layers; guides will fit technical equipment on the parking area before the walk.
- There is limited shelter at the parking area — bring a small daypack with a warm drink and any personal items you need during the activity.
Guided glacier walk and ice-climbing introduction
Guided traverse of the glacier: hike to the glacier plateau, practice cramponing and ropework, then attempt short vertical climbs (ice wall, moulin or crevasse edge) under guide supervision. The guide will manage safety lines and demonstrate climbing techniques.
Tips from local experts:
- Keep small personal items zipped and secure — phones and cameras can be used but should be on a strap to avoid loss.
- Pace yourself on the glacier; slow, steady steps with crampons are safer than rushing—inform the guide if you need extra breaks.
- Expect variable snow and ice conditions; additional waterproof layers and warm gloves are strongly recommended.
Return to parking, gear removal & debrief
Return hike from the glacier to the parking area, removal of crampons and harnesses, and a short debrief with the guide. Time to change footwear and pack away any rented boots if applicable.
Tips from local experts:
- Allow a change of shoes and dry socks for the return — feet can get wet and cold during glacier activities.
- If you rented climbing boots on location, confirm return procedure with the guide before departing.
- There is no on-site public transport; ensure you have arranged onward transport or a pickup at the parking area.
