Itinerary
Day 1
Meet in Virpazar, check in at the Kingfisher desk, then a 2-hour guided boat cruise around Lake Skadar visiting narrow channels, Lesendro views, three wild islands and a swim stop before returning to Virpazar.
Check-in at the Kingfisher information desk (Virpazar)
Meet the guide and exchange your voucher for boat tickets at the Kingfisher information desk near the central bridge in Virpazar. Staff will confirm passenger safety briefing and distribute life vests.
Tips from local experts:
- Arrive 30 minutes before departure for check-in and safety briefing.
- Search for "Kingfisher Boat & Kayak - Lake Skadar, P16, Virpazar, Montenegro" on Google Maps to find the correct meeting point.
- Parking in Virpazar is generally public and free; avoid the private parking directly by De'Andros Hotel as noted locally.
Glide out of the Virpazar channel aboard the wooden boat
Board the traditional wooden boat at the small Virpazar pier and begin the guided cruise through narrow channels surrounded by lakeside vegetation, with views toward the Accursed Mountains and nearby islands.
Tips from local experts:
- Wear a hat and sunscreen for the exposed sections of the boat; shade is limited on wooden boats.
- Keep a camera with a mid-zoom lens ready for wide views of the Accursed Mountains and lakeside scenery.
- Life vests and safety equipment are provided on board — follow the guide's briefing before departure.
View Lesendro fortress from the boat
Navigate past reed meadows and under Tanki Rt bridge toward Lesendro. The guide will share the history of Lesendro (the 18th-century fortress known locally as 'Bishops' Sorrow') and point out birdlife along the shoreline.
Tips from local experts:
- Binoculars are useful for spotting cormorants, herons and other birdlife around Lesendro.
- This is a viewpoints-only stop from the boat—do not plan on disembarking unless your booking explicitly states otherwise.
- Avoid loud noises and bright flashes near nesting areas to reduce disturbance to wildlife.
Explore the three wild islands and water-lily fields
Continue toward the cluster of wild islands (including the Vranjina area) where carpets of white and yellow water lilies and dense reedbeds create a dramatic, Amazon-like landscape. The guide will highlight flora, fauna and local ecology during this prime photo section.
Tips from local experts:
- Leave phones and cameras handy for close-up shots of water lilies and wetland birds; a waterproof case is useful.
- Keep clear of shallow reedbeds; the captain will navigate carefully but avoid standing on open edges of the boat.
- Onboard refreshments include local Vranac wine and juice—consume responsibly if you plan to swim or drive after the tour.
Swim and return to Virpazar (final stretch)
Stop at a suitable calm spot for a short swim in Lake Skadar's clear waters (weather dependent). After the swim, relax on the return cruise to the Virpazar pier while enjoying one last glass of local wine before disembarking.
Tips from local experts:
- Bring swimwear and a quick-dry towel; there are limited changing facilities onboard and in Virpazar.
- Wear water shoes or sandals for entry — lake bottoms can be rocky and slippery near shore.
- Remember National Park rules: do not litter, avoid touching nesting birds, and use rinse-only biodegradable sunscreen where possible.
