Itinerary
Day 1
Full-day guided outing from Walvis Bay to Sandwich Harbour. Start and end in Walvis Bay. Includes light picnic, snacks and drinks, and air-conditioned vehicle transfers where roads permit.
Meeting point & boarding (pickup available)
Meet your guide for check-in and boarding. Guide will hold a poster with guest name. For guests who requested pickup, collection is along Atlantic Street in central Walvis Bay; otherwise please be at the meeting point punctually.
Tips from local experts:
- Be ready 5–10 minutes before the scheduled start; the guide will hold a name poster to assist identification.
- Dress in layers—mornings can be cool and windy near the lagoon.
- If you need pickup, confirm your exact pickup address in advance so the guide can plan the route.
Walvis Bay Lagoon & Salt Works (flamingos, pink lake)
Scenic drive and stops along the Walvis Bay Lagoon to view Greater and Lesser Flamingos and other birdlife. Visit the salt works / pink lake area to see salt harvesting and the coloured salt pans.
Tips from local experts:
- Bring binoculars or use a 200mm+ lens for close-up bird photography of flamingos and pelicans.
- Wear closed shoes—some viewing points have uneven ground and salt-crust surfaces.
- Avoid wearing strong perfumes; birds and seals are sensitive and close approach is limited for protection.
Pelican Point: seal colony & lighthouse viewing
Drive to Pelican Point sandspit for ocean views and to observe the Cape fur seal colony and the Pelican Point Lighthouse from designated viewpoints. Time is allowed for photos and short beach-side viewing—no off-limits access to the colony.
Tips from local experts:
- Seals are best viewed from a distance—follow the guide's instructions and use zoom lenses for close images.
- Expect wind and spray at the point; bring a windproof layer and secure your camera equipment.
- Access to the sandspit can be sandy and uneven—stable footwear is recommended and watch for vehicle tracks when walking short distances.
Coastal drive and dune driving toward Sandwich Harbour
Off-road driving along the coastline and dunes toward Sandwich Harbour. Stops at panoramic viewpoints for photos and short dune climbs to take in where the Namib Desert meets the Atlantic.
Tips from local experts:
- Tide conditions affect which route the guide will choose (beach vs inland dune track); follow the guide's safety brief.
- Secure loose items in the vehicle; dune driving can be bumpy and windy.
- Keep hydrated—carry a small refillable bottle; additional drinks are provided in the vehicle.
Picnic lunch in the dunes (special moment)
Light picnic-style lunch served in the dunes with scenic views of the ocean and desert meeting. A relaxed stop intended as a special moment for photos and to rest before the return journey.
Tips from local experts:
- Inform the operator ahead of time of any dietary restrictions so the picnic can be adapted.
- Shade is limited—bring a sun hat and sunscreen for the break in the dunes.
- Use biodegradable items where possible; take any personal trash back to the vehicle to protect the fragile dune environment.
Return off-road journey back to Walvis Bay
An exhilarating off-road return to Walvis Bay with final panoramic viewpoints en route. The tour concludes back in Walvis Bay where guests are dropped at Atlantic Street or pre-arranged pickup points.
Tips from local experts:
- Keep personal belongings secured during the final off-road sections—vehicles may rebound on sandy tracks.
- Expect the tour to finish in Walvis Bay mid-afternoon; plan onward transport accordingly.
- If you requested a specific drop-off, confirm the address with the guide at the start to ensure smooth return.
