Itinerary
Day 1
Pickup in West Bay and full activity visiting Punta Gorda Garifuna community followed by a boat/mangrove experience near Oak Ridge, then return to West Bay.
Pickup, transfer to and visit Punta Gorda Garifuna village — lunch & cultural dance
Pickup in West Bay by air-conditioned vehicle; transfer to Punta Gorda on Roatán’s east side. Meet local Garifuna hosts for a traditional plate (examples include machuca, fried fish or shrimp with rice/beans and plantain) and watch a short cultural dance and overview of Garifuna history. One local drink per person (beer, soda or water) is included. Time shown includes transfer from pickup point.
Tips from local experts:
- Confirm the arranged pickup point with your operator before the tour; at ports staff may be identified by the company name or a blue shirt—have your booking name ready.
- Bring a small waterproof bag and quick-dry towel—you may get splashed during short boat transfers between shoreline houses.
- Respect local customs: ask before photographing people or private homes and avoid touching cultural items without permission.
East-side shoreline & mangrove channels near Oak Ridge — boat/shoreline exploration
Short transfer from Punta Gorda to the nearby east-side shoreline around Oak Ridge. Explore local water-taxi lanes and mangrove channels by small boat or along the water edge, observing houses built on stilts, local fishing activity and natural mangrove scenery. The visit focuses on learning about daily life and natural features rather than long or strenuous hikes.
Tips from local experts:
- Wear sturdy, closed sandals or water shoes with good grip—many shoreline surfaces are wet, uneven, or muddy.
- Carry insect repellent for mangrove zones and a hat; shade is limited along some shoreline stretches.
- Keep personal items in a dry bag and secure phones/cameras during boat passages; hand-held photos are fine but secure gear when boats are moving.
