Itinerary
Day 1
Day trip from Las Vegas to Willow Beach for a friends-friendly guided kayak tour through Black Canyon to Emerald Cave and back.
Drive from Las Vegas Strip to Willow Beach (self-drive or rideshare)
Depart the Strip early to beat traffic and the midday sun. The scenic drive follows US-93 / NV-163 toward the Colorado River and Willow Beach.
Tips from local experts:
- Aim to leave by 07:00 to arrive relaxed — early departure avoids the hottest part of the day and secures easier parking.
- Fill up on gas in Henderson or Boulder City — services near Willow Beach are limited. Bring a printed or offline map; cell signal can be spotty along parts of the route.
- Bring a cooler or insulated bag if you want extra cold drinks for after the tour (snacks and bottled water are provided on the trip).
Check-in at Willow Beach Marina / Kayak Beach — meet your guide
Meet your certified guide at the first beach on the left (Kayak Beach). Get fitted with your life vest and paddle, receive a safety briefing and basic paddling instruction, and stash personal items in the 13-liter dry bag provided.
Tips from local experts:
- Look for the fleet of beige and dark green kayaks — that’s your group's meeting point (guides will be wearing branded gear).
- Bring your ID and a small amount of cash or card for the National Park entrance fee and any gift-shop purchases.
- Use the restroom and visit the small gift shop at the top of the parking lot before check-in — facilities at the beach are basic.
Launch & paddle into the Black Canyon Narrows
Begin paddling north into the narrow channels of Black Canyon. Enjoy towering canyon walls, watch for desert wildlife, and take short breaks for photos. Guides point out Hoover Dam-era remnants along the route.
Tips from local experts:
- Sit near the middle of the group if you want easy photo opportunities — guides often stop at scenic pinch points for group shots.
- Keep your phone in the supplied dry bag while paddling; bring a small waterproof camera or use a chest-mount for action shots.
- Watch the canyon walls for bighorn sheep and bald eagles early in the morning — quieter water increases wildlife sighting odds.
Explore Emerald Cave, Echo Cave & Lover's Cave — swim & snack break
Paddle into the shimmering Emerald Cave for that signature green glow, try the echo in Echo Cave, then drift into the secluded Lover's Cave. Enjoy complimentary snacks, juice, and bottled water; there's time for a quick swim if you wish.
Tips from local experts:
- For the best Emerald Cave photos bring a polarizing filter or use portrait mode — the green glow is strongest when the sun angle is higher (late morning is ideal).
- Try the echo trick in Echo Cave as a group — clap or call out to hear the cave's unique acoustics; keep it playful but brief out of respect for wildlife.
- If you want to swim, wear water shoes and keep small valuables in the supplied dry bag. Coordinate a buddy system — group safety makes swimming more fun.
Paddle back to Willow Beach — final scenic leg
Enjoy the return paddle, taking in last canyon vistas and any remaining wildlife sightings before arriving back at Kayak Beach. Guides help with landing and gear return.
Tips from local experts:
- Save a few minutes for a relaxed final float — the downstream views offer different photo angles of the canyon walls.
- Ask your guide for recommended local social spots in Boulder City or back in Las Vegas if your group wants to continue the day.
- Stretch your shoulders and lower back gently before hauling kayaks out — a quick group stretch helps avoid stiffness after paddling.
Post-tour snack, gift shop & debrief at Willow Beach Marina
Use this time to change, visit the marina gift shop, grab a souvenir, and debrief with your friends and guide about highlights and photo swaps.
Tips from local experts:
- Visit the marina gift shop at the top of the lot for local keepsakes — card payments are usually accepted but small bills are handy.
- Compare photos with the group — guides sometimes offer to take a final group shot from the shoreline for everyone.
- If you’re hungry, pack a group picnic to enjoy on a shady spot in the lot; keep all trash with you to follow Leave No Trace.
Return drive to Las Vegas Strip
Head back to Las Vegas after an active morning — enjoy scenic views on the return and plan a group landing spot back on the Strip or in Boulder City for lunch/drinks.
Tips from local experts:
- Plan a post-trip rendezvous in Boulder City (about 25–30 minutes from Willow Beach) if your group wants a sit-down meal — it's closer than returning all the way to the Strip.
- Expect limited cell reception in places; coordinate a meeting time/place ahead of departure so the group can reform quickly on return.
- If you used a rental car, top off the tank before returning to the city to avoid last-minute refueling stress.
