Donkey Sanctuary Tour with Local Guide
On this tour, you will experience Bonaire's Donkey Sanctuary - a habitat that was created to rescue donkeys needing extra care, food and water. You will interact with the donkeys throughout the drive as they regularly "say hello" and attempt to put their noses through the car window! At the sanctuary, you can also purchase a few carrots to feed a few lucky donkeys while on your visit.At the sanctuary, you will also see a few other things. The Special Care Unit is an area of the sanctuary where we will learn about the services provided to bring a distressed donkey back to health. You can also visit the garden, where you will see local plants, tortoises, and iguanas.Climbing up the watchtower will give you a great view of the entire sanctuary and a nice photo opportunity. Flamingo & Mangrove Trip with Local Guide
The mangrove forest of Lac Bay is one of the best-preserved mangrove forests in the Caribbean. For generations, this lush, green environment has served as a home and incubator to native fish, baby rays, lobster, and seahorses. The bushy and beautiful trees and their deep, webbed roots, protect Bonaire from extreme weather conditions. In fact, it’s rumored that they’re strong enough to withstand the wind and water to the point of slowing a tsunami!The mangroves are a series of narrow channels that are covered by natural canopies made by the bending of the mangrove trees that house birds, fish, and clean the water. For centuries fishermen and tourists have been visiting, kayaking, and exploring this area of rich waters. Rincon Visit with Local Guide
Rincon Village is the oldest village on Bonaire and is rich in history. It is also the oldest continuous community within the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba. Originally settled by the Spanish in the early 1500s, Rincon was strategically nestled within a valley to ward off impending danger from pirates and other threats. In the 17th century, slaves were brought to Bonaire and worked tending crops and the salt pans until 1863.Living in Rincon, the slave men would weekly walk a 7-hour journey south for work and then return on weekends to gather supplies at Mangazina di Rei (King’s storehouse) and visit their families. We will stop at the Kadushi distillery, where you will be able to taste the local cactus liquor made on Bonaire for free.After visiting Kadushi, we will be stopping at our last stop - a local restaurant called Posada.
