Serpotta's Masterpieces: A 2 Hour Morning Tour
1 km or .6 miles walking, mostly shaded.Immerse yourself in the unparalleled beauty of three different but equally enchanting masterpiece works by the great Palermitano sculptor Giacomo Serpotta. Hailed as "one of the greatest European sculptors of the 18th century," and "a meteor in the Sicilian sky," the acclaimed art historian Rudolph Wittkower declared, "The three small oratories in Palermo which he decorated prove him to be the greatest stuccoist that ever lived."Serpotta was a Baroque sculptor of the sublime who used stucco to transform entire oratories, from floor to ceiling, harmoniously filling them with charming tumbling putti, deeply meaningful religious scenes and allegories, and serene women at their ease, representing the great virtues. His delightful artistry has been beloved for centuries and is still amazing viewers today. On this tour, we will explore why Serpotta isn’t as well-known as Michelangelo in the English-speaking world. We will delve into the meanings of the tableaux in his signature teatrini (little theaters), the tumultuous context of his life, his artistic techniques and innovations, and the mysteries surrounding him. This will provide you with a deep appreciation of Serpotta, his artistry, and authentic Sicilian cultural heritage. Our tour guides specialize in storytelling, bringing Serpotta’s masterpieces to life with captivating tales, expert commentary, and audio and visual aids. Because no tour would be complete without touching on layers of history, this one includes the ongoing mystery of the heist of the Caravaggio Nativity from the Oratory of San Lorenzo, and the recent almost miraculous replacement of that missing masterpiece.Book today and don't miss your chance to experience for yourself the "Dreams made from stucco, woven of white and gold, kept in dark places and sheltered from rain and sun, for weather is the enemy of the material. One must ascend stairs and descend them, enter narrow alleys where clothes snap in the wind, to be rewarded by the vision of laughing and acrobatic creatures, framing serious and dramatic facts, works of faith and mercy, battles of Christians, Turks, and Barbary pirates…" (Excerpt from ‘White Darkness’ by Luca Scarlini).

Historically, however, its origins date back to 582 B.C. when it was founded by Rhodian-cretan colonist from the neighbouring Gela who named their city Akragas after the nearby river of that name. It rapidly increased in size, importance and military strength under Phalarides, the first tyrant, and later under Theron, who extended his way over northern Sicily as far as Himera. Agrigento was a city of artists and illustrious personages, amongst whom the philosopher Empedocles. Pindar defines it as “the most beautiful of mortal cities” and, in fact, in the Vth century B.C., those famous temples, whose beauty we still admire today, were built. This afternoon we then return to Palermo.

Marsala and Erice: Olive oil, Salt and Wine (from Palermo)
We travel along the Salt Way Road and through the Nature Reserve of the Stagnone (that literally means large pool). Since this large lagoon has shallow and very salty water, it is the ideal place for saltworks. While travelling you will be fascinated by this unusual landscape: panels of mirror-like water, held by thin strips of earth and white windmills. Beyond the saltworks stand out some islands – including Mothia, once joined to the mainland by a paved road – while Isola Longa (Long Island) encloses the lagoon. The sea salt, in the tradition of this part of Sicily, is obtained by the evaporation of the sea water, through a simple but functional method of “handmade fractional distillation”, that allows to highlight the positive qualities and at the same time eliminate unwanted compounds such as calcium sulphate or gypsum. The region of Marsala is always known for its fine grapes.Marsala can be dry or sweet. While the city’s natives sometimes drink “vintage” Marsala, the wine produced for export is universally fortified similar to Port, Madeira and Sherry. Originally, this addition of alcohol was to ensure that it would last on long ocean voyages, but now it is made that way because of its popularity in foreign markets. We will visit a local winery and enjoy wine and olive oil tasting and light lunch. This afternoon departure for Erice uptown. The Elymians settled the medieval town of Erice, which was an important religious site associated with the goddess Venus. Wander through its ancient streets and visit some of the famous homemade pastry shops—world-famous for marzipan candies and other delicacies like almond and pistachio pastries. At arrival, friendly walk along the city centre with stop at local pastry shop to taste some Sicilian local sweet. Later we return to Palermo. Then we return to Palermo.

Village Experience (from Palermo)
Departure for a small village off the beaten path located on the slopes of Madonie Mountains. This day will be a unique experience, something that will show you the essence of Sicily, a plunge in a rural and friendly atmosphere, a return to the past by visiting places where time has stopped centuries ago! Upon the arrival we visit a diary producer to learn how milk is processed for cheese production and here you will have the opportunity to taste various types of dairy products of the highest quality.Later (weather conditions permitting) we will drive to the “Grotte della Gurfa” an archaeological treasure, a place veiled with magic and mystery, where we will be taken to a trip back into the past centuries. The Caves of Gurfa are a precious example of rock architecture. Probably dated from the Bronze Age, studies on the ancient use of caves, entirely excavated by man, are still underway, but it is deemed to be used as storage area for grain. Some scholars instead postulate that the whole complex had been built to accommodate the remains of the King Minos who, according to legend, died in Sicily. We will then enjoy a lovely Rustic lunch with “zero food miles” in a relaxing and friendly atmosphere. After lunch we will drive to Alia, a nice village to have an amazing experience based on the interaction with local people and observe artisans at work.Later back to Palermo.

Segesta’s ancient Greek temple can make a valid claim to being the best preserved in the world, and its amphitheatre boasts a hilltop position on Mount Barbaro second to none. The archaeological site reflects the presence of several ancient civilizations, beginning with the elusive Elymians. While the magnificent Doric temple, though (strictly speaking) never completed – as the roof was never added and the pillars never fluted – is impressive, it is just the highlight of a large archaeological park. Today independent visit of the Temple (Admission fee: not included). For the wine experience option:Then along the countryside off the beaten track possibility to join the small village of Camporeale to visit a local winery and enjoy a wine tasting.During the afternoon we then continue onto Monreale to visit the Dome (Admission fee: not included), erected by King William II (1167/71-1189) in a royal park on the site of an earlier Greek church.
