- Scenic drive across the Great Rift Valley and Ngorongoro Conservation Area
- Overnight at a Seronera-area tented camp (Thorntree Camp or similar)
Itinerary
Day 1
Depart Arusha for Serengeti by road (standard option). Drive crosses the Great Rift Valley and Ngorongoro Conservation Area; enter Serengeti via Naabi Hill Gate. Afternoon game drive in Serengeti and check in at camp. Lunch and dinner included.
Meet in Arusha & depart for Serengeti
Meeting point in central Arusha. Quick vehicle briefing and final luggage stow before the drive. Departure from Arusha for Serengeti by road (standard overland transfer).
Tips from local experts:
- Have your main day bag and valuables with you; luggage is stored on the vehicle roof/box for the drive.
- Carry motion-sickness tablets if you are prone to carsickness; request frequent short stops.
- Keep cash and identification in a small, accessible wallet for park permits and stops.
Drive via Ngorongoro Conservation Area to Serengeti (arrive mid–late afternoon) with stopovers
Road transfer through the Great Rift Valley into Ngorongoro Conservation Area, continuing to Serengeti National Park (Naabi Hill Gate entry). Short stops for rest, toilet and lunch en route. Afternoon game drive in the Seronera area on arrival, then transfer to camp for check-in.
Tips from local experts:
- Wear layers: early morning on the road can be cool, afternoons in the plains are warm.
- Bring a refillable water bottle; water is available at lodge/camp but bottled water is limited in the parks.
- Keep cameras and binoculars handy during the drive—wildlife sightings often happen from the vehicle during transit.
Mid-drive rest & lunch stop (Ngorongoro Conservation Area corridor)
Short mid-route stop for restrooms and a packed or roadside lunch during the transfer (standard on-road stop in the Ngorongoro/approach corridor).
Tips from local experts:
- Use the restroom during this scheduled stop—facilities are basic and may be spaced apart.
- Ask for a lighter packed lunch if you have dietary restrictions; inform the guide in advance.
- Stretch and walk briefly to reduce stiffness after the long morning drive.
Check-in at camp and evening routine
Arrive at Thorntree Camp (primary accommodation) for check-in. Time to relax, freshen up and meet staff before dinner. Camp allocation may be Thorntree Camp, Kananga Special Tented Camp or Shuhudia Camp depending on availability.
Tips from local experts:
- Confirm any mobility needs at check-in (room location, assistance) to ensure a comfortable stay.
- Shower facilities and hot water schedules vary; ask staff about the best times for hot showers.
- Power can be limited in tented camps—keep essential devices charged; some camps provide charging stations at reception.
Dinner at camp
Evening meal served at the camp dining area. A relaxed dinner concludes the day after travel and the first afternoon game drive. All meals included as specified in the booking.
Tips from local experts:
- Inform the dining staff of any allergies or dietary needs at check-in to ensure meal preparation.
- Dinner times are set by the camp; be on time as deer/foxes and evening wildlife activity can limit movement after dark.
- Carry a small flashlight for the short walk between tents and dining area after sunset.
Overnight at camp (subject to availability)
Overnight at Thorntree Camp, Kananga Special Tented Camp or Shuhudia Camp depending on availability. Rest and prepare for an early start if a dawn game drive is planned.
Tips from local experts:
- Leave a small torch beside your bed for night-time trips to the bathroom—wildlife is present near camps at night.
- Confirm wake-up time with camp staff the previous evening if you plan a sunrise game drive.
- Secure valuables in the camp safe or hand them to reception; tents have limited secure storage.
Day 2
Full day of game drives in the Serengeti (Seronera area). Optional sunrise drive if requested the previous evening. Packed lunch provided for the whole-day game drive. Overnight at camp.
Optional sunrise game drive (pre-arranged)
Early morning drive at dawn for predators and early activity (wheel-based game drive). Discuss and confirm with your guide the night before if you want this start.
Tips from local experts:
- If you want the sunrise drive, request it with the guide the evening before so wake-up time and vehicle logistics are confirmed.
- Dress in warm layers for the early morning—temperatures can drop sharply before sunrise.
- Bring a small thermos with hot water/tea provided by camp and keep binoculars within easy reach.
Breakfast at camp and prepare packed lunch
Return to camp for breakfast; guides prepare a packed lunch for the full-day game drive in the Serengeti.
Tips from local experts:
- Have a light breakfast if you plan a long day; heavier breakfasts can lead to discomfort on bumpy tracks.
- Confirm any dietary restrictions for the packed lunch with the guide at breakfast time.
- Use the restroom at camp before the full-day excursion as facilities in the field are limited.
Full-day game drive in the Serengeti (packed lunch)
Spend the day exploring the plains of the Serengeti in search of large mammals and birds. The guide will tailor the route to recent wildlife sightings and road conditions. Return to camp in late afternoon.
Tips from local experts:
- Carry sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses—the sun is strong on the open plains even in cooler months.
- Keep cameras and spare batteries or memory cards accessible; charging may be limited until you return to camp.
- Listen to the guide's advice on approaching wildlife—stay seated while the vehicle is near animals for safety.
Late afternoon return to camp & downtime
Return to camp after the day's game drive. Time to rest, wash up and relax before dinner. Evening briefing for next-day departure back to Arusha.
Tips from local experts:
- Check with staff about hot water and shower availability after a long day—the best times can be scheduled.
- Charge cameras and devices at the reception charging point early—charging slots may be limited.
- Confirm wake-up and departure times for the next morning if you plan an early return to Arusha.
Dinner and overnight at camp (subject to availability)
Dinner at camp followed by overnight stay at Thorntree Camp or an alternate Seronera-area tented camp depending on availability. All meals included.
Tips from local experts:
- Place any laundry requests early in the evening if the camp provides laundry service; turnaround times vary.
- Keep a copy of your permits and booking confirmation in your day bag in case camp staff request verification.
- If you need additional hot water or an earlier breakfast, request this at reception the night before.
Day 3
Early morning optional game drive, then breakfast and check-out. Return drive to Arusha (standard option) or transfer to Seronera Airstrip for a scheduled flight to Arusha (if pre-booked). Serengeti Safari ends on arrival back in Arusha.
Optional early morning game drive
Optional early drive to see predators and morning activity. Confirm with your guide the previous evening to arrange wake-up time.
Tips from local experts:
- If you want the early drive, request it with the guide the night before so wake-up time and vehicle logistics are confirmed.
- Wear warm layers for the cold early hours; temperatures rise quickly after sunrise.
- Bring a small snack or biscuits if you tend to get hungry before the scheduled breakfast at camp.
Breakfast, check-out and prepare for departure
Breakfast at camp followed by check-out. Luggage loaded onto the vehicle. If a flight is pre-booked, transfer to Seronera Airstrip will be arranged instead of the full drive to Arusha.
Tips from local experts:
- Ensure all personal items are packed the night before to speed up check-out and departure.
- If you have a flight from Seronera Airstrip, reconfirm the departure time with camp staff and allow extra time for paperwork.
- Collect any physical receipts or documents you may need for the rest of your travel before leaving camp.
Drive back to Arusha (standard overland option)
Depart Serengeti for the return drive to Arusha. Expect a long drive with short stops for rest and refreshments. Arrival in Arusha ends the Serengeti Safari package.
Tips from local experts:
- Expect a long drive back to Arusha—pack motion-sickness remedies and snacks for comfort.
- Plan onward transport in Arusha in advance; taxi or hotel transfer from the meeting point can be arranged on arrival.
- Keep a small change of clothes and essential medication in your day bag for the return trip.
Alternative: transfer to Seronera Airstrip for flight to Arusha (if pre-booked)
If a flight from Seronera to Arusha (or onward) has been pre-booked, the guide will transfer you to Seronera Airstrip for the scheduled flight instead of the overland return. Confirm flight bookings prior to departure.
Tips from local experts:
- If flying from Seronera, have your boarding pass and identification ready; small airstrips have tight check-in windows.
- Airstrip transfers can require early arrival—confirm the exact pick-up time with your guide the night before.
- Flights from small airstrips have strict luggage limits; verify baggage allowances ahead of time to avoid repacking.
Tour end on arrival in Arusha
Arrival in Arusha completes the 3-day Serengeti Safari. Drop-off will be at the central Arusha meeting point unless other arrangements were made in advance.
Tips from local experts:
- Confirm your drop-off location in Arusha with the guide in advance to coordinate onward transfers.
- Allow time in Arusha before international flights—plan an extra night if your international flight is same-day from Kilimanjaro or Dar es Salaam.
- If you need assistance with onward travel bookings (hotels, transfers), ask your guide or the local operator for basic recommendations.
