Itinerary
Day 1
Private 4.5-hour tour. Driver will collect you from your hotel/apartment (driver waits outside) and provide bottled water and Wi‑Fi on board. Travel time between stops is included in the times below.
Acropolis
Start at the Acropolis, a timeless symbol of classical Greece. Built during Athens’ golden age under Pericles and sculptor Pheidias, it showcases remarkable monuments like the Parthenon, reflecting the city’s artistic and democratic achievements.
Tips from local experts:
- Pre-order Acropolis entry tickets a few days before (tickets reduce queueing) and bring ID required for some ticket types.
- Wear sturdy, non-slip shoes—surfaces are uneven marble and can be slippery when wet.
- Arrive early in the tour to enjoy softer light for photos and fewer crowds on the slopes.
Parthenon
Visit the Parthenon, the magnificent temple dedicated to Athena, Athens’ patron goddess. Celebrated for its proportions and sculptural decoration, it stands as a masterpiece of ancient architecture.
Tips from local experts:
- Respect the fenced-off areas and follow the site staff instructions for safety and conservation.
- For pairs: the Parthenon’s north terrace gives good city-backdrop photos with fewer people.
- Keep sun protection (hat, sunscreen) handy—shade is limited on the monument itself.
Temple of Athena Nike (Athens Nike)
Discover the Temple of Athena Nike, the smallest temple on the Acropolis, perched at its southwest corner. Built around 420 BC, it was dedicated to Athena as goddess of victory.
Tips from local experts:
- The temple sits on a raised bastion—take care on the short steps and narrow viewpoints.
- This spot offers intimate vantage points for couple photos overlooking the city below.
- Visits here are short; plan to move on promptly to stay on schedule for other stops.
Erechtheion
Visit the elegant Erechtheion on the north side of the Acropolis, built between 421 and 406 BC and famous for the Porch of the Caryatids—six female figures serving as columns.
Tips from local experts:
- Observe the Caryatids from the designated viewing points—touching is not permitted to protect the stonework.
- If you prefer quieter photos, the north side near the Erechtheion is often less congested than the Parthenon terrace.
- Keep movement slow and steady on the narrow walking margins around the shrine.
Odeon of Herodes Atticus (Herodus Atticus Odeon)
Descend to the southern slopes to see the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, an ancient stone theatre built in 161 AD that still hosts concerts and events today.
Tips from local experts:
- This site is best seen from the slope walk below the Acropolis; allow a few minutes to descend carefully.
- If there is an event, staff may restrict access—your driver will adapt the route as needed.
- Pairs can pause on nearby terraces for atmospheric photos of the theatre with the Acropolis above.
Temple of Olympian Zeus
View the imposing ruins of the Temple of Olympian Zeus, once the largest temple in Greece; construction took place over centuries and was completed under Emperor Hadrian.
Tips from local experts:
- The open site has limited shade—carry water and consider sun protection during warmer months.
- Allow time to walk the perimeter for different photographic angles of the remaining columns.
- This stop is primarily an external viewing and photo opportunity; respect ropes and signage.
Panathenaic Stadium
Pause at the Panathenaic Stadium, rebuilt in marble around 144 AD and famously used for the 1896 first modern Olympic Games. It is the world’s only stadium built entirely of marble.
Tips from local experts:
- Walk up a few steps into the stands for a dramatic couple shot on the marble benches.
- If you wish to enter the stadium grounds, allow a few minutes extra for brief ticketing queues.
- Stadium surfaces are stone—bring comfortable shoes if you plan to climb to the top rows.
Changing of the Guards (Presidential Mansion)
Witness the Changing of the Guards ceremony outside the Presidential Mansion. The Evzones, ceremonial guards in traditional uniform, perform their precise routine.
Tips from local experts:
- The ceremony is brief—arrive on time and stay behind barriers for safety and unobstructed views.
- Keep a respectful distance and silence during the formal parts of the ceremony.
- Early or mid-morning performances are easier to photograph with fewer spectators.
Hellenic Parliament (pass-by)
As you pass by, admire the Hellenic Parliament building, originally built as the Royal Palace in the 19th century and today the seat of Greece’s parliament.
Tips from local experts:
- This is typically a short drive-by stop; step out briefly for photos if traffic and timing allow.
- Watch for pedestrian crossings and traffic when taking photos near the square.
- Combine this stop with the Changing of the Guards visit—they are in the same central area.
Lycabettus Hill (photo stop)
Pause for photos at Lycabettus Hill, the highest point in Athens. From here you can see panoramic views of the city, the Acropolis, and the sea.
Tips from local experts:
- The drive and short walk to the viewpoint are included—bring a light jacket if there is wind at the summit.
- For couples: the viewpoint offers high-elevation city panoramas ideal for sunset or golden-hour photos if timing permits.
- If you prefer, the funicular operates to the summit; check current operating times if you plan to ride (not included).
Plaka (drive-through)
Experience the charm of Plaka as you drive through its narrow, winding streets beneath the Acropolis—known for neoclassical architecture, shops, and cafés.
Tips from local experts:
- This visit is a short drive-through with brief stops; note steep and narrow pedestrian streets if you step out.
- If you wish to explore Plaka further after the tour, keep an eye out for independent cafés and pedestrian alleys to return to later.
- Be mindful of your belongings in crowded pedestrian lanes; keep cameras and phones secure for quick photos.
Archaeological site of Ancient Agora
Conclude at the Ancient Agora, the historic civic heart of ancient Athens. Wander among ruins that once hosted markets, assemblies, and philosophical discussions.
Tips from local experts:
- The Agora has shaded walkways—use these during hotter months and consider a brief seat break at the museum’s exterior areas.
- If you want more time inside, mention this to your driver in advance—the tour schedule is private and can be adapted within the booked duration.
- Follow marked paths and signage; some excavated areas are fenced for preservation.
