Itinerary
Day 1
Meet at the guide's meeting point for bike fitting and safety briefing; tour proceeds through Bruges' central highlights and finishes in the guide’s secret garden for a final tasting and debrief.
Burg
Burg Square — historic seat of power with landmark buildings like the Town Hall and Basilica of the Holy Blood. Short orientation stop after bike fitting and departure from the meeting point.
Tips from local experts:
- Meet at least 10 minutes early at the meeting point (29 Grauwwerkersstraat) for bike fitting and a quick safety briefing before we depart.
- The cobbles in Burg are uneven — when stopping to listen to the guide, stand beside your bike rather than straddling it for safety.
- Keep your phone charged for quick photos; tower shadows can affect exposure—use HDR/portrait mode for better results.
Duke's Palace
Dukes' Palace (Prinsenhof) — exterior views and the story of the Dukes of Burgundy during Bruges' medieval golden age.
Tips from local experts:
- We view the palace exterior and courtyard from the bike; if you want to visit inside after the tour, plan for separate entry hours at Prinsenhof 8.
- Stand clear when the group stops on the narrow streets around the palace to keep traffic flow smooth.
- If carrying a backpack, keep zips closed while we pause — streets can be narrow and busy with pedestrians.
Groene Rei
Groenerei canal — a tranquil, tree-lined canal perfect for a relaxed ride and photos of the reflected medieval architecture.
Tips from local experts:
- Ride single-file along the canal sections; pedestrian traffic can be close to the water's edge.
- If you want a close-up canal photo, ask the guide to help position the group safely off the bikes.
- Watch for damp or mossy paving near the canal edges—brakes can be less effective on wet cobbles.
Belfry Tower
Belfry of Bruges — iconic medieval bell tower dominating Market Square; we view and discuss its history from the square (tower climb not included).
Tips from local experts:
- The Belfry steps are steep and narrow; the tour does not include climbing—plan a separate visit if you want panoramic views.
- Market Square can be busy—keep bikes close and watch for delivery vehicles early in the day.
- If you carry valuables, keep them in an inner pocket while in the square; it's a busy photo spot.
Jan van Eyck Square
Jan van Eyckplein and the Old Harbour — historic waterfront area once central to medieval trade.
Tips from local experts:
- This area has narrow paths by the water—dismount and walk the bike if you want to get close to the quay for photos.
- Group photos work best on the wider cobbled section near the statue—ask the guide to position everyone safely.
- Keep an eye on the canal edge while taking photos; it’s an active boating area in warmer months.
Simon Stevin Square
Simon Stevinplein — small historic square with the statue of Simon Stevin; quick local history stop en route to a chocolate tasting.
Tips from local experts:
- This square is small—stand to one side to keep the flow of pedestrians moving.
- If you plan to buy later at The Chocolate Line, hold space in your bag for a small box to avoid crush damage.
- There are public benches nearby if anyone needs to rest briefly before the tasting stop.
The Chocolate Line
The Chocolate Line — tasting of a praline from one of Bruges' top chocolatiers as part of the tour inclusions.
Tips from local experts:
- Tasting is included — if you prefer no chocolate (allergy or dietary), tell the guide before we enter so an alternative is offered.
- The shop can get busy; please follow the guide’s instructions to keep the group compact while inside.
- If buying chocolates to take home, ask for a small box or padded packaging to protect pralines during the rest of the ride.
Vesten (Gentpoortvest & windmills)
Vesten / Gentpoortvest — the medieval remparts, canals and the traditional windmills that line the city walls.
Tips from local experts:
- Windmill paths can have loose gravel—reduce speed on approach and follow the guide’s directions for safe viewing.
- There is limited shade along sections of the remparts; bring a hat or light jacket in spring weather.
- If you want to visit inside a windmill later, note there are visitor hours and separate entrance fees.
Women's Garden (Beguinage)
Begijnhof (Beguinage) — a peaceful enclosed community of whitewashed houses and a quiet courtyard dating back to the 13th century.
Tips from local experts:
- The Beguinage is a peaceful, quiet site—please speak softly and respect the courtyard’s calm atmosphere.
- Dismount and walk your bike on the cobbles inside the Begijnage to protect the pavement and for pedestrian safety.
- Restrooms are limited nearby; use facilities before entering the enclosed courtyard if possible.
Jerusalem Chapel
Jerusalem Chapel (Peperstraat) — a small 15th-century chapel inspired by the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
Tips from local experts:
- The chapel is compact — keep group chatter to a minimum and follow the guide’s guidance when viewing inside or from outside.
- Respect any signage about photography—some religious sites limit flash or interior photos.
- There are narrow streets nearby; keep your bike close to the curb while stopping briefly for the chapel view.
Gruuthuse Garden
Gruuthuse Hof — historic courtyard of the Gruuthuse family, connected with the Church of Our Lady and rich medieval heritage.
Tips from local experts:
- The courtyard area is compact—group members should keep to one side to allow regular foot traffic to pass.
- If you’re interested in museum visits, the Gruuthuse Museum has separate opening hours and admission.
- Wear comfortable shoes—some cobbles around the courtyard can be uneven.
Rozenhoedkaai
Rozenhoedkaai — Bruges’ most photographed canal viewpoint; classic postcard scene of historic houses and bridges.
Tips from local experts:
- This is a popular photo spot—the guide will manage quick group photos; please be ready to rotate to let other visitors take pictures.
- Step off your bike and secure it when taking photos to avoid blocking the narrow quay.
- Watch for passing canal boats when framing shots near the water’s edge.
Lake of Love (Minnewater)
Minnewaterpark (Lake of Love) — romantic lakeside views and parkland on the edge of the historic centre.
Tips from local experts:
- The park paths are ideal for a relaxed pace—use lower gears and keep right to allow pedestrians room.
- If you prefer quieter photos, move a short distance along the lake away from the main bridge for fewer crowds.
- Be ready for a short grassy section near the bank—if wet, step off the bike to avoid slipping.
Almshouses
Historic almshouses — examples of Bruges’ medieval social care, often arranged around quiet courtyards.
Tips from local experts:
- These are residential historic sites—respect privacy and avoid loud group behaviour in the courtyards.
- Dismount on steep or narrow approaches to the almshouses to maintain safety for pedestrians.
- If anyone needs a restroom stop, inform the guide now; facilities are limited in this area.
Bladelin Castle (Hof Bladelin) — finish & tasting
Bladelin House (Naaldenstraat) — meet-back in the guide’s secret garden for a final rest, a taste of Bruges beer or alternative drink, and a waffle included in the tour.
Tips from local experts:
- We finish in the secret garden at Naaldenstraat 19—leave bikes in the designated area while you relax with your drink and waffle.
- If you prefer a non-alcoholic drink, tell the guide before the tasting so an alternative is served.
- Use this final stop to ask the guide for tailor-made recommendations for the rest of your stay (restaurants, boat trips, or quieter photo spots).
