Itinerary
Day 1
Meeting point: Bab al-Futuh (Gate of Conquest)
Group meeting and introduction to the district and safety briefing. Your Egyptologist guide meets the group at the main gate of Bab al-Futuh to outline the route and historical context.
Tips from local experts:
- Arrive 10 minutes early to locate the guide at the main gate on Darb Al Keshta; uneven pavements and local traffic mean an early arrival avoids rushed crossings.
- Wear comfortable, supportive shoes—pavements near the gate are uneven and the meeting point sits beside a working street.
- Carry a hat and water bottle for sun protection; bottled water is provided but having a personal bottle helps for brief stops.
Al-Hakim Mosque - exterior and courtyard
Guided visit to one of the oldest Fatimid mosques in Cairo; explore the mosque's exterior, courtyard and immediate surroundings with historical commentary.
Tips from local experts:
- Modest dress is required for mosque visits; women should have shoulders and legs covered and a headscarf ready—your guide can advise and assist.
- Shoes are removed if entering prayer areas; the guide will indicate where to leave them and where to step to avoid wet/dirty floors.
- If a prayer service is taking place the guide will adapt the visit—expect brief waiting periods; use this time to sit in the courtyard (seating available).
Bayt al-Suhaymi (17th-century Ottoman house)
Interior visit to Bayt al-Suhaymi to view traditional rooms and courtyards and learn about domestic life of Cairo's past elite.
Tips from local experts:
- The historic house contains low doorways and steps—mind your head and step carefully; tell the guide in advance if you need assistance with stairs.
- Photography policies can vary indoors; ask the guide before taking pictures inside the house to avoid disrupting the site.
- Restroom facilities are limited inside older houses; use available public or museum restrooms before continuing onto the street-walking portion.
Walk along El-Moez Street (Al-Muizz li-Din Allah Al-Fatimi)
A paced, interpretive stroll along the UNESCO-listed Al-Muizz (El-Moez) Street, pausing to view façades, inscriptions, and selected small vendors where the guide will arrange hygienic street-food tasters.
Tips from local experts:
- Street surfaces vary along El-Moez; maintain a steady, even pace and use shaded spots for short rest breaks—the guide schedules these for comfort.
- The guide selects only hand-picked vendors known for hygiene; ask for small sample portions if you prefer lighter tastings.
- Carry hand sanitizer and small notes/coins for quick purchases; crowded sections can be narrow—keep personal items secure and close to you.
Sultan Barquq Mosque & Qalawun Complex
Guided viewing of Mamluk-era architecture: the ornate Sultan Barquq Mosque and the Qalawun complex (mosque/madrasa/mausoleum), with explanation of architectural features and social history.
Tips from local experts:
- Interiors can be dim and include steps; use handrails where provided and wear non-slip shoes for safety on polished floors.
- Respect quiet areas around mausoleums; the guide will indicate where to pause for commentary and where photography may be restricted.
- If mobility is a concern, inform the guide—there are flatter viewing points nearby that still offer good sightlines to the facades without stairs.
Al-Hussein Mosque & conclusion in Khan el-Khalili area
Visit Al-Hussein Mosque's exterior and immediate areas, followed by a guided introduction into the nearby Khan el-Khalili bazaar area (time for short, included tastings and a relaxed walk). This serves as the tour's conclusion and orientation to the bazaar.
Tips from local experts:
- Khan el-Khalili is lively and can feel crowded; keep walking aids close and choose quieter side alleys if you need a low-traffic route—the guide will lead these.
- Secure belongings and keep small valuables in front-facing bags; the guide will point hygienic, seated spots for the tour's final tastings (Zalabia, Koshary samples).
- If you prefer a bench or seated finish, tell the guide—there are café corners and mosque courtyards nearby where seniors can rest before dispersal.
