Itinerary
Day 1
Hotel pickup & drive south toward Cusipata
We pick you up at your accommodation in Cusco and begin the ~3‑hour drive south toward Cusipata. Comfortable tourist transport with short observation stops along the way; you may rest on the vehicle during the transfer.
Tips from local experts:
- Be ready in your hotel lobby at least 10 minutes before pickup time; guides pick up from the hotel door listed on your booking.
- Dress in warm layers for the early morning transfer; temperatures are cold before sunrise and warm up mid‑day.
- Keep your ID/passport and a small daypack with water, sunscreen and snacks with you; the guide will collect larger luggage for the vehicle.
Breakfast and high‑Andean observation stops in Cusipata
Short stops to admire high‑Andean towns, agricultural terraces and camelid herds. Breakfast in Cusipata prepares you for the hike ahead.
Tips from local experts:
- Choose a light, warm breakfast (soups or eggs) to help with altitude; avoid heavy or greasy foods before hiking.
- If you feel any dizziness or headache, tell your guide immediately—there is oxygen on board and the guide will monitor group altitude symptoms.
- Use the restroom before leaving the town: services are basic and may be limited at higher elevations.
Transfer to Phulawasipata and hike to Vinicunca (Rainbow Mountain)
Drive from Cusipata to the Phulawasipata trailhead, then a 1 hour 30 minute uphill hike (moderate–challenging, due to altitude) to the Rainbow Mountain summit. Time at the top for photos and explanation of local geology and origins.
Tips from local experts:
- Walk slowly and breathe steadily—maintain a pace that feels controlled to manage altitude; sticks are provided and recommended.
- Bring sunscreen, a hat and layers; the sun is strong at high altitude even when cold.
- Carry your camera and a spare battery or power bank; cold reduces battery life and the viewpoint rewards photography.
Return walk to trailhead and lunch in Cusipata
Return hike from the summit to the trailhead, then a short transfer back to Cusipata for an included lunch to refuel after the walk.
Tips from local experts:
- Allow time to rehydrate—drink water before and after the hike; bottled mineral water is provided but bring a refillable bottle if you prefer.
- Choose warm, carbohydrate‑rich lunch options to help recovery after exertion at altitude.
- If you used trekking poles on the ascent, keep them for the descent to reduce knee stress on the downhill sections.
Return transfer to Cusco and drop‑off at accommodation
Board tourist transport for the return drive to Cusco. Drop‑off at the door of your accommodation in the city so you can rest after the day.
Tips from local experts:
- Expect a 1.5–2 hour return drive; rest on the vehicle and keep warm as temperatures can drop after the afternoon.
- If you experienced any altitude issues during the day, let your guide know before being dropped off so they can advise next steps.
- Plan a relaxed afternoon/evening in Cusco (no strenuous activity) to recover from the day at high altitude.

Full Day Rainbow Mountain Tour
Why this experience
One of the best day trips from Cusco, Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) is a high-altitude trek to one of Peru's most visually striking peaks. At approximately 5,200m, the mountain's slopes are painted in natural mineral bands—crimson, gold, turquoise, and violet—that intensify in colour as you climb. The trek itself is a full-day commitment, typically starting before dawn to reach the summit by mid-morning and descend before afternoon cloud cover rolls in. You'll walk through high-altitude grassland with views of the Vilcanota mountain range, and depending on your acclimatization and pace, the summit hike takes 4–5 hours. This is a straightforward, non-technical trek, making it accessible to most fitness levels, though altitude is the real challenge. The experience feels remote and otherworldly—far fewer crowds than Machu Picchu, and a genuine sense of earning your view.
Before you go
- Best time: Autumn and spring (April–May, September–October) bring clear skies and mild temperatures. Winter can have afternoon snow; summer brings frequent afternoon rain that obscures views.
- Budget: Check the booking widget for current tour pricing. Budget extra for acclimatization drinks (coca tea), tips for guides, and high-altitude snacks you may want to bring yourself.
- Difficulty: Moderate to high, primarily due to altitude rather than technical skill. You need solid cardiovascular fitness and time to acclimatize in Cusco beforehand (at least 1–2 days at 3,400m).
- What to bring: Layers (temperature drops significantly above 4,500m), a waterproof jacket, sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses), hiking boots with good ankle support, and a headlamp or torch for the predawn walk to the trailhead.
- Getting there: Early pickup from Cusco hotels (typically 4–5 AM). Return by early evening.
- Accessibility: Not suitable for those with unmanaged altitude sensitivity, heart conditions, or mobility limitations. The trek involves steep uphill sections with no switchbacks or technical gear, but it's unrelenting.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the full trek take? Plan for 8–10 hours total, including drive time from Cusco (1.5 hours each way), the ascent (4–5 hours), descent (1.5–2 hours), and a stop for lunch. Most groups summit by 10–11 AM.
Do I need climbing experience or special gear? No. This is a high-altitude hiking trail, not a climb. You don't need ropes, harnesses, or mountaineering experience—only good fitness and proper acclimatization.
What's included in the tour? A guide, transportation from Cusco, and usually a packed lunch. Some operators include coca tea and snacks. TheNextGuide's booking widget connects you directly to the operator, where you'll see the full itinerary, what's provided, and cancellation policies.
Can I do this if I've just arrived in Cusco? Not recommended. Altitude sickness can occur rapidly. Spend at least 1–2 days in Cusco (or another high-altitude town) before attempting Rainbow Mountain. Drink water constantly, avoid alcohol, and consider consulting your guide about coca tea or other remedies.
What if I don't reach the summit? Many people turn back before the peak—that's normal and safe. Your guide will support whatever pace you can manage. The mountain views are stunning even at lower elevations.
