Itinerary
Day 1
Shared pick-up from accommodation in Funchal
Shared roundtrip transfer picks you up from your accommodation in Funchal. Driver will collect up to 8 guests per van; exact pickup window and meeting point confirmed in your booking message.
Tips from local experts:
- Be ready in the hotel lobby 5–10 minutes before the scheduled pickup; driver may collect multiple guests on the route.
- Pack your hiking daypack the night before (water, snacks, layers) so boarding is quick.
- If you have mobility or luggage considerations, notify the operator in advance so the driver can assist.
Arrive at Parque Florestal das Queimadas — PR9 Caldeirão Verde (self-guided hike)
Receive hike instructions, map explanation and safety briefing at Queimadas Park, then follow the Levada trail through Laurissilva forest to Caldeirão Verde and back. The self-guided hike covers ~12 km round trip and includes several tunnels (bring a torch/headlamp). Expect roughly 5.5 hours walking time; total time on site including briefing is ~5 hours 50 minutes.
Tips from local experts:
- Purchase the mandatory forest admission (IFCN) on the morning of the hike if you haven't already — bring cash (~4.5 EUR) or follow the operator's emailed instructions.
- Carry a small headlamp or reliable torch for the tunnels (some are up to ~200 m) and wear sturdy, non-slip shoes.
- There is a cafe and toilets at Queimadas Park (WC may charge ~1 EUR) — use facilities before starting the trail and refill water bottles if needed.
Photo stop: Traditional Santana houses (on return)
Short stop to view and photograph Santana's famous triangular thatched houses while returning to Funchal. This is a brief 15–25 minute stop on the transfer route.
Tips from local experts:
- Keep cameras ready; this is a quick stop intended for photos and short walks only.
- If you want to step inside a house or visit a craft stall, allow extra time — the scheduled stop is short.
- Watch for narrow roads when leaving the vehicle; remain with the group and follow the driver’s instructions.
Return drop-off in Funchal (shared transfer)
Shared transfer returns you to your original pick-up area in Funchal. Arrival time depends on traffic; plan for a mid-afternoon return.
Tips from local experts:
- Keep a copy of the operator's contact (WhatsApp assistance is included) in case of any changes to drop-off.
- Expect the driver to drop guests at central hotels first; allow a few extra minutes for final drop-off if you are at the end of the route.
- If you need onward transport from Funchal (taxi or public transit), plan it for after the scheduled return time to avoid rushing.
