Itinerary
Day 1
Meet at the public cave entrance and take a guided walk through the caves on Ægissíða. The route includes short uneven paths between cave entrances; the guide will pause frequently for explanation and to allow a comfortable pace.
Guided visit to the Caves of Hella (Ægissíða)
Meet at the designated cave entrance on Ægissíða for a guided exploration of the five caves open to the public. The guide explains the known archaeology and points out carved seats, wall markings and crosses. The visit includes short walks on uneven ground between cave entrances and brief stops for interpretation.
Tips from local experts:
- Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes with good grip; paths between caves are uneven and can be slippery after rain.
- Bring a warm, waterproof outer layer and dress in layers — coastal Icelandic weather can change quickly even in summer.
- Site facilities are limited. Use restrooms in Hella town before arriving and allow an extra 5–10 minutes to reach the cave meeting point from central Hella.
