Itinerary
Day 1
Pickup from your Heraklion-area accommodation (hotel, port or airport) will be arranged between 18:00 and 18:30. Evening route visits family producers in Peza, Alagni and near Knossos for guided tastings of local wines, raki and olive oil paired with Cretan cheeses. Return to accommodation by approximately 22:00.
Vineyard visit & wine tasting — Peza
Visit a family-owned vineyard in the Peza region for an introductory wine tasting of Cretan grape varieties and a short explanation of local winemaking traditions.
Tips from local experts:
- Dress in layers: countryside evenings can cool quickly after sunset.
- If you prefer non-alcoholic options, tell the guide on pickup so alternatives (juice/soft drinks) are ready.
- Bring a small camera or phone for low-light photos; producers appreciate polite, unobtrusive pictures.
Traditional raki distillery — Alagni
Short drive to Alagni to meet a local raki distiller. Learn about distillation traditions and taste raki alongside commentary from the producer.
Tips from local experts:
- Raki is served in small measures; allow the guide to explain local customs for toasting (Yamas).
- This stop may be indoors but with limited seating—notify the operator in advance if you require a seat immediately.
- Avoid wearing strong perfumes so you can fully appreciate the aromas during tastings.
Olive oil & cheese tasting — Knossos area
Conclude the tasting route near Knossos with an olive oil tasting paired with local Cretan cheeses and a brief, friendly tutorial on tasting olive oil correctly.
Tips from local experts:
- Savor small bread pieces provided for olive oil and cheese sampling; they help neutralize the palate between samples.
- If you have food allergies or intolerances, confirm them with the guide at pickup so producers can adapt the pairing.
- Expect a short walking path (unpaved in places) — wear comfortable shoes suitable for light countryside terrain.
