Itinerary
Day 1
Full-island north and south highlights with guided stops. Pickup at the port exit in Kralendijk for cruise passengers; otherwise a pre-arranged meeting point in Kralendijk.
Kralendijk
The island's colorful capital. Short orientation, boarding and tour briefing; chance for quick photos along the waterfront.
Tips from local experts:
- If arriving by cruise, the guide will meet at the pier exit holding a sign with your name—look for them there.
- Bring a small daypack and wear light layers; mornings can be breezy near the waterfront.
- Use this brief stop to check restrooms or pick up small items in town before heading to more remote stops.
1000 Steps
One of Bonaire’s most iconic coastal viewpoints and dive-site access; coastal stairs and lookout over turquoise sea. Short walk and photo opportunity — terrain includes many steps.
Tips from local experts:
- Wear sturdy, closed shoes — the descent and climb include many uneven steps; pace the ascent.
- Bring reef-safe sunscreen and a hat; there is limited shade at the viewpoint.
- Keep distance from wildlife (iguanas) and use binoculars or a zoom lens for sea turtle or seabird sightings.
Gotomeer
Saltwater lake and natural flamingo habitat—short stop for birdwatching and photos.
Tips from local experts:
- Stand quietly and keep distance from the water's edge to avoid disturbing flamingos.
- Ground around the lake can be uneven and salty; closed shoes are recommended.
- This stop is best for photos—use a telephoto lens or zoom on your phone for close-up shots of birds.
Rincon
Oldest village in the Dutch Caribbean — short cultural stop to see local architecture and village atmosphere.
Tips from local experts:
- Wear comfortable shoes; streets are historic and may be uneven with occasional steps.
- Bring small bills if you plan to buy snacks or local crafts from vendors in Rincon.
- Be respectful when photographing residents—ask permission before close portraits.
Salt Ponds
View towering salt mounds and vibrant pink salt ponds with contrast against turquoise sea—scenic photo stop and a recommended short 'special moment' for couples.
Tips from local experts:
- Sunglasses recommended—the salt flats reflect strong sunlight and can be very bright.
- This is a popular photo location; plan a short romantic photo moment but remain behind barriers where present.
- Salt can cling to shoes and clothing—avoid sitting on salt mounds and rinse feet/shoes later if needed.
Slave huts
Small 19th-century white huts offering a brief, reflective look at Bonaire's history during the era of slavery.
Tips from local experts:
- These are historic structures—do not enter or climb on the huts; observe from designated paths.
- There are no facilities at this site; use restrooms earlier in the tour if needed.
- Allow a moment of quiet reflection; photography is allowed but keep noise to a minimum out of respect.
