Itinerary
Day 1
Private 3-hour guided photography walk beginning in the Jardim Vasco da Gama area and finishing at a Champalimaud waterfront sunset viewpoint. Start time example: 17:00 — end: 20:00 (times adapt to booking).
Meet at Pavilhão Tailandês (Sala Thai) — quick briefing & kit check
Meet your photographer-guide at the small Thai pavilion in Jardim Vasco da Gama for a 10-minute introduction, camera check and a short briefing on the afternoon’s photo plan and safety.
Tips from local experts:
- Look for the guide with a camera strap — the pavilion is small and easy to spot near Rua Vieira Portuense.
- If you brought a tripod, leave it in your bag for the first part — we’ll pick the right moment to use it later for sunset shots.
- Bring a light jacket for the evening breeze off the Tagus; the guide will advise on layering for golden-hour comfort.
Mosteiro dos Jerónimos — architectural detail & perspective control
Focused session on carved limestone details, using light and shadow for intimate architectural portraits of the monastery façade and cloisters (outside).
Tips from local experts:
- Avoid the obvious wide-front shot; seat each other on low steps to frame faces with the carved columns for intimate couple portraits.
- Because part of the monastery may be under renovation, your guide will suggest unobstructed angles and close-ups of carvings that still read beautifully in side light.
- Use a 35–50mm equivalent for environmental portraits and a longer focal length (85–135mm) to compress details — the guide will show framing examples on your camera.
Centro Cultural de Belém (CCB) — reflections & modern frames
Quick exploration of the CCB forecourt and reflecting pools for minimal, modern compositions and layered framing with the cultural centre’s clean lines.
Tips from local experts:
- Use the low reflecting pools to create a romantic mirrored silhouette of you two — arrive with shoes you don't mind stepping onto low curbs for the best angle.
- The guide will demonstrate using foreground architectural lines to lead the eye from you into the monument — great for couples who want storytelling images.
- Evening light softens the concrete; ask for a shallow depth-of-field portrait to isolate you from the background while keeping the cultural building recognizable.
Padrão dos Descobrimentos — silhouettes and bridge alignments
Compose layered shots with the Discoveries Monument, foreground elements and the Tagus; practice silhouette and backlit portrait techniques as the sun lowers.
Tips from local experts:
- For a classic romantic silhouette, stand slightly apart and hold hands — the guide will place you so the monument lines the horizon between you.
- Try shooting with the 25–70mm range to capture both intimate couple frames and wider environmental portraits with the Ponte 25 de Abril in the distance.
- Avoid the busiest spots directly in front of the monument; your guide knows quieter side angles that still include the river and bridge.
Pastéis de Belém — a sweet break and food photography practice
Short break to taste and photograph the legendary pastéis de nata. Learn quick food/street photography tips for natural, intimate food shots you can share on social media.
Tips from local experts:
- Ask for one pastel to share and photograph it beside a coffee cup — the guide will suggest low-angle compositions with hands to add intimacy.
- If you want fewer crowds, get a takeaway box and photograph the pastries on a bench — golden tones pair beautifully with late-afternoon light.
- Mind small bags and purses while at the counter; the bakery is popular — your guide will help order quickly so you keep the light window.
Torre de Belém waterfront — reflection techniques & long-exposure practice
Extended session near Torre de Belém to capture reflections, use foreground elements and practice long exposures as light dims (tripod optional).
Tips from local experts:
- If you brought a small tripod, now’s the moment for a gentle long-exposure of the river with you two in soft focus — the guide will set exposure and composition.
- Look for the tidal puddles and polished paving to capture mirror reflections of the tower; low viewpoints work best for romantic symmetry.
- Be mindful of scaffolding or renovation fencing — the guide will point to unobstructed viewpoints and frame compositions to hide visual clutter.
Fundação Champalimaud waterfront viewpoint — sunset panorama & final coaching
Finish at the Champalimaud waterfront for panoramic sunset shots of the river, bridge and a final coaching session on editing and building a cohesive couple’s portfolio.
Tips from local experts:
- Stand on the stone benches or the lower promenade to layer yourselves against the bridge — the guide will suggest poses that read well at long distance.
- Golden-hour can be windy at the water’s edge; a compact diffuser or holding jacket helps control hair and clothing for portrait shots.
- Use the final 10 minutes to review favourite frames on your camera with the guide; pick 2–3 images to refine composition and light in-camera before you leave.
