Itinerary
Day 1
3-hour audio-guided City Quest through central Lisbon. This plan assumes a 18:00 start in May (spring) so you can enjoy golden-hour at the main viewpoint and finish by the riverside with evening lights.
Start / Meet: Praça Dom Pedro IV (Rossio) — check-in & quick pastel
Begin at Rossio square. Quick orientation, redeem your izi.TRAVEL QR/personal code and sample a pastel de nata nearby before you set off.
Tips from local experts:
- Arrive 5–10 minutes early to scan the QR code in the guide and confirm audio playback on your phone — a charged phone and headphones make the audio immersion much better.
- For a freshly baked pastel de nata nearby, pop into 'Manteigaria - Fábrica de Pastéis de Nata' on Rua do Carmo for a warm couple-sized treat before you walk.
- Rossio is mostly level and easy to access; hold hands at the fountain for a classic photo with the square’s wave-patterned pavement as background.
Ride the Elevador da Glória — funicular up to Bairro Alto
Short, charming funicular ride that climbs from Praça dos Restauradores up to Bairro Alto — part of Lisbon’s tram and funicular heritage and an easy, romantic lift up the hill.
Tips from local experts:
- Buy a single funicular ticket at the machine or use a Viva Viagem card — stand on the right for the best window views as you ascend.
- The ride is brief (a few minutes) but atmospheric: lean together on the wooden bench and take a quick selfie framed by the sloping street.
- If the funicular has a short queue, use the time to read the next audio chapter — the app will trigger location-based stories as you arrive at the top.
Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara — golden-hour special moment
Relax at this landscaped viewpoint overlooking Baixa and the Tagus. This is the City Quest’s intended golden-hour stop — perfect for sunset photos, audio storytelling and a quiet romantic pause.
Tips from local experts:
- Claim a bench or the edge of the terrace facing the river for unobstructed sunset views; bring a light shawl if the evening breeze cools down.
- Use this extended stop (35 minutes) as your 'special moment' — play the full audio story here, take couples photos and toast with a small take-away drink.
- If you want a rooftop cocktail afterwards, note PARK Bar (Calçada do Combro 58) — a short walk from the miradouro — good for a private rooftop toast after the Quest.
Igreja de São Roque — Baroque church (exterior & short interior visit)
A short cultural stop to admire São Roque’s austere exterior and, if time allows, its richly-decorated chancel (one of Lisbon’s artistic surprises).
Tips from local experts:
- Check opening times quickly — the main church often permits short interior visits; if it’s open, allow a few extra minutes to see the ornate chapels.
- The entrance area has steps — hold hands on the approach; if you prefer to stay step-free, admire the façade from the square outside.
- For couples who enjoy quiet cultural moments, read (or listen to) the audio segment here about Lisbon’s religious and convent history to enrich the visit.
Praça Luís de Camões — lively square & people-watching
A short stroll to this vibrant meeting point between Chiado and Bairro Alto — great for absorbing local life and café culture.
Tips from local experts:
- Stand by the Camões statue for an iconic photo; the square buzzes with street musicians in the evening — a sweet soundtrack for couples.
- If you want a small espresso together, choose a terrace table facing the square so you can watch the city unfold.
- This square marks the route between neighbourhoods — use the app to unlock a short Camões-themed quiz here for a playful shared moment.
Miradouro de Santa Catarina — relaxed riverside panorama
A small popular viewpoint with a bohemian feel and views over the river and 25 de Abril Bridge — relaxed spot to soak in evening light.
Tips from local experts:
- The 'Adamastor' statue is a romantic meeting point — great for a twilight photo together with the Tagus in the background.
- Bring a small shared snack or drink from a nearby shop and sit on the stone steps — it’s one of Lisbon’s local hangouts at sunset.
- Be mindful of cyclists and scooter traffic on the promenade below; keep bags close and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere.
Pink Street (Rua Nova do Carvalho) — iconic colourful alley
A quick walk through Lisbon’s famous Pink Street for bold photos and to experience the nightlife-tinged atmosphere (early evening is quieter).
Tips from local experts:
- For couples, early evening is ideal: the pink pavement photographs beautifully without the late-night crowds.
- Hold hands while crossing the coloured strip for a stylised photo; the street’s bars pick up later — this time of day is more intimate.
- If you prefer a quieter alternative, stroll the parallel riverside path for similar views away from the busiest stretch.
Time Out Market (Mercado da Ribeira) — shared food & drinks stop
A lively food hall offering diverse stalls — choose a few small plates to share (seafood, petiscos, or a pastel each) and toast with a glass of wine.
Tips from local experts:
- Pick a quieter stall (look for local chefs rather than the busiest counters) and take your tray to an upper-level table with views of the hall.
- Try sharing several small dishes (petiscos) so you can taste more — ask vendors for recommendations if you want a romantic tasting platter.
- If you prefer more privacy, order takeaway and walk a short distance to the riverside to eat while watching lights reflected on the water.
Sé de Lisboa (Lisbon Cathedral) — historic riverside cathedral
A quick exterior and (if open) interior visit to Lisbon’s cathedral, an atmospheric medieval landmark close to the waterfront.
Tips from local experts:
- The cathedral façade and nearby cloisters are atmospheric at dusk — perfect for quiet, reflective photos together.
- If the interior is open, its dimly lit nave is romantic in a solemn way; check audio content for a short chapel story to listen together.
- Watch your step on the uneven stones near the entrance; comfortable shoes are recommended for cobbled areas.
Arco da Rua Augusta — triumphal arch in Baixa
Walk through the pedestrianized Rua Augusta and pause at the Arco to enjoy the bustling centre of Baixa as evening settles in.
Tips from local experts:
- Stand beneath the arch and look back toward Rua Augusta for a classic Lisbon evening shot with the city lights starting to glow.
- If you prefer panoramic city views from above, the arch terrace sometimes opens as a viewpoint (check opening hours); it’s a romantic vantage point.
- This area can be busier; keep belongings secure and use the arch as a natural meeting point if you briefly separate to explore nearby shops.
Finish: Cais das Colunas — riverside sunset/nightlight finale
End at the elegant riverside steps of Cais das Colunas where the city meets the Tagus — a quiet place to sit, reflect and watch the lights catch the water.
Tips from local experts:
- Sit on the low river steps together — easy to find a quiet spot as the evening progresses; the columns frame a perfect skyline photo.
- If you want a final toast, pick a small bottle (or take-away wine from Time Out Market) and enjoy it here — be mindful of local litter rules.
- For a romantic extension, consider a short tuk-tuk or tram ride back to Bairro Alto for a rooftop cocktail (PARK Bar) — it’s a short add-on after your City Quest.
