Tips from local experts:

  • Keep one hand on brakes when passing market stalls and watch for pedestrians and scooters.
  • Use the e-bike's assist modes conservatively on descents—your guide will recommend settings based on skill level.

Why this experience

Most visitors to Medellín see El Poblado and maybe the cable cars to the hillside. You're going to see the real Medellín — the neighbourhoods where locals live, work, and eat. Ride through residential streets lined with shops and cafes, roll through local markets where vendors know each other, stop at hidden parks where families gather on weekends. An e-bike makes this doable: Medellín's hills would crush you on a regular bike, but electric assist lets you coast up and explore without struggle. Your guide carries the local knowledge — they'll point out the history in a building's architecture, explain a neighbourhood's transformation, and most importantly, they'll take you to eat where Medellín eats.

Five food stops are woven into the ride. Arepas from a family-run corner shop, empanadas still warm from the fryer, fresh juice made to order, dishes that tourists never find because they never leave the tourist zone. By the time you get back, you'll have tasted a city that most people miss entirely, met people who live there (not perform for tourists), and understood why locals love this place.

Before you go

  • Best time: Year-round. Morning departures are ideal — cooler temperatures (Medellín hovers around 22°C/72°F year-round), and local markets are at their liveliest early in the day. The e-bike's electric assist handles Medellín's famous hills effortlessly in any season.
  • Budget: Check the booking widget for current tour pricing. Multiple food stops are included (arepas, empanadas, juice, local specialties). Bring cash for any additional snacks or drinks you want to buy at markets or from street vendors.
  • Difficulty: Easy — this is specifically designed for people who aren't confident cyclists. E-bikes eliminate the challenge of Medellín's steep terrain. Routes are flat and gentle through neighbourhoods; no cycling experience required.
  • What to bring: Comfortable clothing (layers for variable mountain temperature), secure walking shoes, sunscreen, hat or cap, small backpack for water bottle and personal items. Helmets and e-bikes are provided.
  • Getting there: Meeting point is in or near El Poblado (exact location provided after booking). Walking distance from most El Poblado hotels, or a short taxi ride from the airport.
  • Accessibility: E-bikes are suitable for most fitness levels. If you have concerns about balance, joint problems, or haven't ridden a bike in years, mention it to your operator — they can suggest alternatives or adjust the route.

Frequently asked questions

I haven't ridden a bike in years. Will I be okay?

Yes. E-bikes do most of the work, so you're not fighting Medellín's hills. Your guide will give you a brief orientation on the bike and the electric assist. Most participants are casual or returning cyclists. Take it at your own pace, and let your guide know if you need to slow down.

How much of the ride is uphill?

The e-bike's electric assist handles the climbing. You'll pedal, but the motor is doing the hard work. This means you can enjoy the experience and the views instead of suffering on climbs.

What's included in this itinerary?

This itinerary features a bookable guided experience with e-Bike City Tours Medellin. Included: e-bike rental with helmet, 4–5 hour guided tour through local neighbourhoods, five food stops (arepas, empanadas, fresh juice, local specialties), visits to local markets, neighbourhood stories and cultural context from your guide, and a safe return to your meeting point.

Are the itineraries on TheNextGuide free?

Yes. Every itinerary is free to browse and follow. Some pages feature bookable guided experiences through the booking widget — these are optional and priced by the operator.

Is there a weight limit for the e-bikes?

Most e-bikes support riders up to 120kg (265 lbs), but confirm with your operator when booking. If you're near or above that weight, mention it — they may have heavier-duty bikes available.

What if I get tired during the ride?

The electric assist does the heavy lifting, so fatigue is minimal. If you do get tired, the e-bike is easier to ride slowly than a regular bike. Your guide can adjust the pace or suggest a rest stop.
