Itinerary
Day 1
Full-day plan for joining the Dharavi Slum Tour. Choose the meeting point on your voucher (Churchgate or Mahim). The core tour is a guided 2.5-hour walking experience through Dharavi's working lanes and small industries.
Meeting Option A — Churchgate Railway Station (meet at AH Wheeler bookstall inside station)
If your voucher specifies Churchgate: arrive by 09:15 for the morning tour (or 13:45 for the afternoon shared tour). Meet the guide at the AH Wheeler bookstall ~30m before the platforms — guide will wear a dark blue polo with the Reality Tours logo.
Tips from local experts:
- Arrive 10–15 minutes early — Churchgate can be busy; meeting point is inside the station near the bookstall (look for the AH Wheeler sign).
- Travel light: small daypack, water bottle (you’ll be given water during the tour) and covered shoes — the lanes are uneven.
- Bring small change (INR) if you plan to buy a low‑cost craft or snack from local micro‑businesses — card payments are uncommon here.
Meeting Option B — Mahim Junction Railway Station (main entrance / ticket office, west side)
If your voucher specifies Mahim: arrive at Mahim Junction at 10:00 (or 14:30 for the afternoon shared tour). Meet at the main entrance/ticket office — V-Jai Restaurant & Bakery will be opposite and Cafe Coffee Day diagonally opposite.
Tips from local experts:
- Confirm the meeting time printed on your ticket — the operator runs multiple start slots; the Mahim meeting time is typically 10:00 for morning shared tours.
- If you're arriving by local train, allow an extra 5–10 minutes to navigate crowds and find the west-side entrance.
- If you need to contact the guide on the day, use the WhatsApp number on your voucher (+91 98208 22253).
Guided walking tour — Dharavi (core experience: recycling area, rooftop visit, papad-making, Kumbharwada pottery)
A 2.5‑hour ethically guided walk through Dharavi’s narrow lanes and working micro‑industries. The guide will take you to the recycling area, a rooftop vantage point (for context only — photography inside Dharavi is NOT permitted), a papad‑making spot and Kumbharwada pottery colony. The route covers industrial pockets where residents craft goods sold across Mumbai.
Tips from local experts:
- Strict no‑photography rule inside Dharavi out of respect for residents — your guide will point out good photo opportunities outside the area for context shots.
- Wear covered shoes and modest clothing (shoulders and knees covered). The walking surface is uneven — allow 2–3 km of walking spread over the 2.5 hours with many small stops.
- Be ready to sample a small handmade snack (papad/tea) when offered — it’s a great way to interact with residents; if you wish to purchase small crafts, ask the guide for fair‑payment guidance so funds go back to families.
Guided walking tour — Dharavi (alternate start if meeting at Mahim)
Same 2.5‑hour guided Dharavi experience timed for groups that met at Mahim Junction (starts ~15 minutes after the Mahim meetup). Covers recycling workshops, rooftop visit for context, papad-making and Kumbharwada pottery colony.
Tips from local experts:
- If you met at Mahim, the group typically starts straightaway — keep water and sunscreen handy for the short walks between stops.
- Ask the guide about the social-enterprise projects supported by Reality Tours — many guests like to follow up with Reality Gives info after the tour.
- The guide can point you to local, authentic souvenir options (small ceramics, hand‑rolled papads) — buy directly through recommended vendors so proceeds support the community.
Optional group lunch / debrief — near Churchgate (post‑tour)
After the Churchgate‑meeting tour, gather for an easy group lunch nearby to compare impressions and ask the guide follow‑up questions. A popular, group‑friendly spot in Colaba is Cafe Mondegar (iconic, relaxed atmosphere) — suitable for groups who want a casual meal.

- Tuesday8:00 AM – 11:30 PM
- Wednesday8:00 AM – 11:30 PM

- Friday8:00 AM – 11:30 PM
- Saturday8:00 AM – 11:30 PM
- Sunday8:00 AM – 11:30 PM
Tips from local experts:
- Cafe Mondegar is a lively, casual spot — ask for a larger table if you’re in a group and specify dietary needs (vegetarian options are plentiful).
- Carry some cash — while cards are accepted, small tips or purchases may be easier in cash.
- If you want a quieter debrief, request a table in the inner seating area away from the jukebox and murals.
Optional group lunch / debrief — near Mahim (post‑tour)
After the Mahim‑meeting tour, meet the guide for a relaxed post‑tour snack or meal at V-Jai Restaurant & Bakery (opposite Mahim station). Great for groups wanting local bakery fare, chai and quick plates.
- Monday9:00 AM – 9:00 PM
- Tuesday9:00 AM – 9:00 PM
- Wednesday9:00 AM – 9:00 PM
- Thursday9:00 AM – 9:00 PM
- Friday9:00 AM – 9:00 PM
- Saturday9:00 AM – 9:00 PM
- Sunday9:00 AM – 1:00 PM
Tips from local experts:
- V-Jai Restaurant & Bakery is an informal local favourite — try simple vegetarian plates or a strong masala chai to recharge after the walk.
- Seating is limited at peak times — if you’re a group, split into smaller tables or walk a few minutes to nearby cafés for larger seating.
- This is a good place to exchange contact details with fellow travellers and ask the guide about volunteer/NGO projects supported by the tour.
Tour wrap-up & drop-off (debrief and next steps)
Brief debrief with the guide — opportunity to ask about Reality Gives, purchase responsibly sourced souvenirs, and confirm where you’ll be dropped off (if you chose pickup/drop). End of tour; return independently by taxi/local train or follow group suggestions for nearby neighborhoods to explore.
Tips from local experts:
- Ask the guide for recommendations on where to explore next (Bandstand, Colaba or Bandra) depending on your energy and interests.
- If you need a taxi, request the guide to call one from a reputable app (Ola/Uber) or a local contact — it’s faster than flagging in busy areas.
- Remember the no‑photography rule inside Dharavi — if you want pictures, step outside the area (your guide can point out nearby vantage points).
