Itinerary
Day 1
Full-day (morning) coasteering experience starting at Portinho da Arrábida, followed by beach time and an optional afternoon visit to Setúbal's famous market.
Meet & check-in — Rua do Portinho da Arrábida
Meet your guide and group at the Portinho meeting point for check-in, paperwork (passport required) and a quick photo before suiting up.
Tips from local experts:
- Carpool or share a taxi: parking at the Portinho can be limited in July — coordinate to drop one car and share rides to save time and split costs.
- Waterproof group photo: bring a cheap waterproof phone pouch — guides often pause for team photos on the cliffs and you’ll want those shots.
- Quick essentials: have your passport, weight/height details and a small dry bag ready in one person’s backpack for easy check-in.
Suit up & safety briefing (wetsuit, helmet, lifejacket, gloves)
Fitting of 5mm thermal wetsuit, harness, helmet and lifejacket; short safety demo and technique run-through (non-mandatory obstacles are explained).
Tips from local experts:
- Wear a swimsuit under your wetsuit so you can change quickly after the activity and avoid sitting around in wet clothes.
- Label your shoes and small items with bright tape — many groups leave footwear on the shore while in the water and similar shoes get mixed up.
- Bring a small dry towel and a spare T-shirt in a quick-access day bag; there’s limited shade at the meeting area for changing.
Coasteering route — cliffs, caves (Sta. Margarida), zipline, rappelling & cliff jumps (+short boat trip)
Guided 800m coastal route through Arrábida Natural Park: rock walks, short rock-climbs, cave passage visits (including the small Sta. Margarida chapel cave), optional rappels, zipline-to-water, cliff jumps with alternatives, swims and a short support-boat transfer.
Tips from local experts:
- Go for the group jump moment: if your group wants a shared adrenaline rush, pick a pre-arranged ‘countdown’ and have one person film from the boat — it makes a great social clip.
- Respect the alternatives: if someone’s nervous about a rappel or jump, guides always provide easier options so no one slows the group down — speak up early.
- Protect your camera gear: if you bring an action cam, attach it to a chest or helmet mount; handheld devices are easy to lose in surf and on rocks.
Boat return, rinse & debrief
Short boat transfer back to the Portinho shore, quick rinse/dry and final safety debrief. Opportunity to tip guides and swap contact info / photos.
Tips from local experts:
- Tipping & photos: if you liked the guides’ photos, ask to trade contact details right away — guides often share group photos and appreciate small tips.
- Rinse stations: there’s usually only a basic rinse area — pat yourself dry with a microfiber towel and change into dry clothes before lingering.
- Hydration check: even though water is provided, rehydrate with electrolyte drinks after the activity — you’ll appreciate the boost before lunch.
Lunch & relax at Praia do Portinho da Arrábida
Relax on the small, scenic beach beside the meeting area. Option to eat at a nearby beachfront snack/restaurant (seasonal) or enjoy a packed lunch / picnic on the sand.
Tips from local experts:
- Local seafood tip: if you want an on-site meal, ask the guides which seasonal beach snack stand is open — July can be busy but there are usually local options for grilled fish.
- Try choco frito (fried cuttlefish): it’s a Setúbal specialty — if you plan to visit the town later, sample it at the Mercado do Livramento stalls.
- Sun care & shade: bring a portable umbrella or lightweight shade blanket — the beach is small with limited umbrellas in peak season.
Optional transfer — Mercado do Livramento, Setúbal (seafood & atmosphere)
Optional 30–40 min drive into Setúbal to visit Mercado do Livramento — one of Portugal’s finest municipal markets. Ideal for groups who want fresh seafood plates, tapas or to buy local snacks to take home.
Tips from local experts:
- Best stalls: arrive mid-afternoon for a slightly quieter market and ask stallkeepers for the day's freshest catches — they’ll recommend simple grilled plates perfect for sharing.
- Group ordering hack: order several small plates (e.g., fried cuttlefish, clams, grilled sardines) and share — it’s cheaper and more social for groups of friends.
- Timing & parking: July afternoons are busy — consider dropping some people near the market and using one car for parking to reduce walking with wet gear if you didn’t fully dry.
