Itinerary
Day 1
Shared pickup from accommodations in Funchal and Caniço (~05:30), transfer to Pico do Arieiro for briefing and sunrise. Self-guided hike along PR1 to Pico Ruivo and down to Achada do Teixeira (approx. 5 hours, 10 km). Group pickup at Achada do Teixeira and return transfer to Funchal/Caniço.
Starting Point - Pico do Arieiro
Shared pickup from Funchal/Caniço begins around 05:30. Transfer (air-conditioned van, up to 8 guests) to Pico do Arieiro (approx. 1.5 hours). On arrival the host provides a digital map, route explanation and safety briefing. Brief window for sunrise and last gear-check before setting off on the PR1 route toward Pico Ruivo.

- Dress in layers and bring a windproof jacket — temperatures at Pico do Arieiro are often several degrees colder than Funchal at sunrise.
- Wear sturdy hiking shoes with good grip; final approach and early trail sections can be rocky and uneven.
- Confirm your exact pickup address in Funchal/Caniço the evening before; pickup runs start ~05:30 and transfers take about 90 minutes.
Finish Point - Achada do Teixeira
Self-guided hike along PR1 from Pico do Arieiro, passing Pico Ruivo (max elevation ~1862 m), and descending to Achada do Teixeira. Estimated hiking time on trail: 5 hours (approx. 10 km total). On arrival at the Achada do Teixeira parking area you wait for the pre-arranged shared pickup back to Funchal/Caniço (transfer ~1.5 hours).

- There are limited services at Achada do Teixeira — bring all water and snacks you’ll need for the hike as listed in the activity notes.
- Mobile signal can be unreliable on parts of PR1; download the digital map provided and take a portable battery pack for your phone/GPS device.
- Wait in the Achada do Teixeira parking area for the pickup vehicle; the driver will collect guests from the main parking lot where the trail meets the access road.
