Itinerary
Day 1
Pickup from accommodation (Funchal & Caniço only)
Shared transfer picks you up at your listed accommodation in Funchal or Caniço and transports the group to Pico do Arieiro.
Tips from local experts:
- Be ready at the accommodation lobby 5–10 minutes before the scheduled pickup time; drivers cannot wait for late arrivals.
- Keep a small daypack with water and snacks accessible in the vehicle for the hike.
- Confirm your exact pickup address in advance with the operator if your accommodation is outside central Funchal or Caniço.
Starting Point - Pico do Arieiro
Arrival at the Pico do Arieiro viewpoint. Short briefing, route notes, and digital map provided before you begin the self-guided hike.
Tips from local experts:
- Layer up at the summit — conditions can be windy and much cooler than in town.
- Use the briefing to confirm turn points and the approximate timing for the 5-hour route.
- Check your footwear and hydration before you set off; there are no services once you leave the ridge area.
Self-guided hike: Pico do Arieiro → Pico Ruivo → Achada do Teixeira (PR1)
Walk at your own pace along the PR1 ridge route. Trail distance is approximately 10 km and the scheduled hiking time is 5 hours. This is a mountain trail with exposed sections and varied terrain.
Tips from local experts:
- Carry at least 1.5–2 liters of water per person and energy-rich snacks; there are no reliable water points on the ridge.
- Follow the supplied map and marked trail posts; stay on the route and keep a comfortable, steady pace—allow extra time for photography and short rests.
- Bring sun protection (hat, sunscreen) and a light waterproof layer—weather can change rapidly at altitude.
Finish Point - Achada do Teixeira
End of the PR1 hike at the Achada do Teixeira parking area where the vehicle will pick up the group.
Tips from local experts:
- Conserve mobile battery for photos and arranging pickup; signal can be variable—share your ETA with the operator if you fall behind schedule.
- Use the short stop after arrival to change into a warm layer for the drive back; temperatures at the finish can be cooler than lower elevations.
- If you have permits or paperwork, confirm with the host before leaving the parking area to ensure everything is in order.
Transfer: Achada do Teixeira → Accommodation (Funchal & Caniço)
Shared vehicle returns participants to their accommodation in Funchal or Caniço after the hike.
Tips from local experts:
- Keep small trash and used snack wrappers with you until the vehicle pickup to leave the site as you found it.
- Inform the driver of your preferred drop-off address in Funchal or Caniço before departure so they can plan the route.
- Be prepared for a winding downhill drive; if you are sensitive to motion, bring travel sickness prevention.
