Itinerary
Day 1
Full-day guided loop around Sal island visiting natural pools, salt crater, Shark Bay, fishing village, Murdeira Bay, mirage viewpoints and Kite Beach. Pickup from hotels begins ~8:40; tour runs 09:00–16:00.
Buracona — Blue Eye (Olho Azul)
Visit the natural limestone pool and lookout known as the Blue Eye. Short walks and viewpoints to see the water-filled caverns and coastal rock formations.
Tips from local experts:
- Wear sturdy shoes — the viewpoint uses uneven rock paths and can be slippery.
- Bring a light windproof layer; coastal breezes can be strong even on sunny days.
- Keep cameras ready for quick photo opportunities; visits are brief and often popular with other groups.
Pedra de Lume — Salt Crater / Salinas
Explore the salt crater and relax in the highly saline lake where it’s easy to float. Short guided explanation of the salt history and therapeutic qualities of the waters.
Tips from local experts:
- Bring water and a towel; the salt lake can dry out your skin—rinse if you plan to stay longer.
- Avoid metal jewelry in the salt water and bring a waterproof bag for phones/cameras.
- Footwear with good grip is recommended for the short walk from the parking area to the crater rim.
Shark Bay (Santa Maria) — Lemon sharks viewing
Short visit to Shark Bay area to observe lemon sharks in their natural environment with a certified guide. Sightings are from shore/boat vantage points as guided by safety rules.
Tips from local experts:
- Follow the guide’s safety instructions at all times; keep a safe distance from wildlife.
- Bring binoculars or a telephoto lens for better wildlife photos from the shore or boat vantage.
- Wear sun protection — shaded areas are limited during this stop.
Murdeira Bay (natural reserve)
Stop at the natural bay of Murdeira to view the coral diversity, fish life and the coastal landscape with a view of Leão Mountain (Lion Mountain). Short shoreline walk and photo stops.
Tips from local experts:
- Observe and do not touch corals or marine life when near the shore.
- Bring a refillable water bottle and hydrate — shade can be limited.
- Respect local fishing activity and keep a comfortable distance from working areas.
Palmeira — Fishing village
Visit the port of Palmeira to watch local fishing activity, colorful colonial houses and the market area. This stop includes time for a short rest; optional lunch can be taken here (not included by default).
Tips from local experts:
- Carry small local currency for purchases at the fish market or small stalls.
- When photographing fishermen and boats, ask permission — many appreciate being asked first.
- If taking the optional lunch, inform the guide of dietary restrictions in advance.
Pedra de Lume — Historic village visit
Short cultural walk in Pedra de Lume to see older houses, boats and remnants of the cable car system once used to transport salt. Guide explains the island’s salt-export history.
Tips from local experts:
- Leave large bags at the vehicle; the stop includes narrow streets and steps in places.
- Wear comfortable walking shoes — some streets are uneven and narrow.
- Listen to the guide for historical context that enhances the small-site visit.
Desert mirage viewpoint
Short stop at a desert viewpoint to observe temperature-driven mirage effects on the sand and to photograph the illusion of water on the horizon.
Tips from local experts:
- Mirage effects are best viewed on sunny, calm days — keep an eye on glare and use sunglasses.
- Keep to marked tracks or follow the guide to avoid fragile desert vegetation.
- Carry a hat and sunscreen; shade is not available at the viewpoint.
Santa Maria — Town walk and history
Explore Santa Maria’s main streets, learn about its development from salt-export town to tourist centre, and see local street art and shops. Good quick photo stops and light shopping.
Tips from local experts:
- Carry small change for souvenirs and local vendors; card acceptance can be limited.
- Stick to shaded streets or take short breaks — the town can be hot in midday sun.
- Follow the guide for a concise route that highlights the town’s history and art.
Kite Beach (east coast) — view point
Final short stop at Kite Beach to see the kitesurfing area and coastline. Good viewpoint to conclude the tour and take photos of the eastern shoreline.
Tips from local experts:
- If you want to watch kitesurfers, keep a safe distance from launch zones and follow local signage.
- Wind can be strong near the beach — secure hats and light items before disembarking.
- This stop is brief; use it for photos and a last seaside view before return to drop-off.
