Itinerary
Day 1
Pyrgos of Trigonion
Panoramic view of Thessaloniki and a short visit to the original medieval city walls to orient to the city’s geography and history.
Tips from local experts:
- Expect coastal breezes—bring a light layer for morning panoramas.
- There is limited shade at the tower; bring sunscreen and water (bottled water provided in the vehicle).
- This stop is a quiet viewpoint ideal for couples — allow a few minutes for photos and the short walk to the wall.
Vlatadon Monastery
Visit the 14th‑century Byzantine monastery in the Upper Town with sweeping views over the Thermaic Gulf; modest dress is required inside the church.
Tips from local experts:
- Shoulders and knees must be covered to enter the church—bring a light scarf or wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees.
- The monastery is still active; speak softly and avoid flash photography inside the church.
- There are narrow walking sections and a short uphill approach—comfortable shoes are recommended.
Church of Saint Dimitrios (Hagios Dimitrios)
Visit Thessaloniki’s main Byzantine church where the relics of Saint Dimitrios are kept and learn about the city’s Christian history.
Tips from local experts:
- The church is active; services may be in progress—respect service times and photography rules.
- There are steps at the entrance—plan for a short standing or seated visit depending on mobility.
- Keep small change available for any candle donations or small offerings if you wish to participate.
The Greek Agora / Roman Forum (Ancient Agora)
Walk through the open-air Roman Forum at the junction of Olympou and Filippou streets to see the remains of Thessaloniki’s Roman-era public centre.
Tips from local experts:
- This is an outdoor archaeological site—wear comfortable shoes for uneven surfaces.
- There is limited onsite shelter; in hot weather plan for sun protection and lightweight clothing.
- The site is compact and close to other central attractions, which makes it easy to explore as a short stroll together.
Rotunda of Galerius (Rotonda)
External and contextual visit to the Rotunda — a unique circular building with a layered history as a temple, church, mosque and church again. (On some days the interior museum is closed and we view it from outside.)
Tips from local experts:
- Rotunda opening hours vary; interior access is not guaranteed (tickets not included), so be prepared for an external visit.
- If interior entry is important to you, ask the guide in advance to check museum opening times and ticket availability.
- There is limited seating inside the surrounding square; plan for a short standing visit and photos.
Galerius Arch (Kamara)
See the remains of the Arch of Galerius and learn about Via Egnatia, the ancient road which crossed through Thessaloniki.
Tips from local experts:
- The Arch sits on a busy street—watch traffic when stopping for photos.
- This is a short, primarily outdoor stop—it pairs well with a brief break for a coffee in the nearby central streets.
- The area is level but can be busy at midday—maintain close contact with the guide for group placement and timing.
The White Tower of Thessaloniki
Visit the city’s most recognisable landmark and hear its layered history. Note: White Tower admission is not included in the tour price.
Tips from local experts:
- Admission to the White Tower is not included—if you plan to climb to the top, have your tickets arranged or allow time to purchase them on site.
- The tower area sits on the seafront promenade (Nikis Avenue)—it’s pleasant for a short walk, so bring a light windbreaker if on the waterfront.
- Photography from the promenade gives a strong couple’s photo opportunity with the sea as a backdrop.
Statue of Alexander the Great (finish)
Conclude the tour at the prominent statue of Alexander the Great on the seafront and enjoy final views toward the east as the tour ends.
Tips from local experts:
- This is an open public square—it’s an easy, relaxed final stop for photos and a short walk along the promenade.
- The statue faces east—late morning and mid-day light work well for portraits; coordinate with your guide for the best angles.
- If you plan to continue exploring locally, ask your guide for a brief recommendation for a nearby café or a quiet spot on the promenade.
