Why this experience
Tandem paragliding from Signal Hill isn't about extreme sport—it's about perspective. You'll launch from one of Cape Town's most dramatic viewpoints, with a skilled pilot guiding you through the air as you float over Lion's Head, the Atlantic Seaboard, and the vast sprawl of the Mother City below. The flight itself is remarkably quiet and meditative; you feel the thermals, the wind patterns, the silence that comes from being utterly suspended. It's a full-body experience of scale—the mountains that felt massive from ground level suddenly become texture, the beaches become brushstrokes, the city becomes a map you're reading from above.
What makes this work is the tandem setup. You're not piloting; you're experiencing. The pilot handles all technical decisions while you focus on the sensation and the view. It's accessible to people who've never flown before and who might be terrified of heights—the reality of floating is often less scary than the anticipation.
This is for anyone who wants to see Cape Town the way birds do.
Before you go
- Best time: Spring (September-November) offers consistent thermals, calm mornings, and clear skies. Autumn (March-May) is also excellent with predictable wind patterns. Summer (December-February) works but can have gusty conditions; winter (June-August) is less ideal with stronger, less stable winds.
- Budget: Check the booking widget for current tour pricing. Includes all safety equipment, tandem pilot, and flight duration.
- Difficulty: Easy (physically). No prior experience needed. Psychological readiness matters more—comfort with heights and willingness to trust the pilot.
- What to bring: Comfortable athletic clothing, closed-toe shoes with ankle support, light jacket (cooler at altitude and in the air), sunscreen, hat. No loose items—everything goes in a secure bag or leaves with someone on the ground.
- Getting there: Meet at Signal Hill, a summit easily accessed by car or Uber from central Cape Town. Parking and a café are on-site.
- Accessibility: Mobility must be sufficient to walk up Signal Hill and to launch/land (a few quick steps). Discuss any physical limitations with your pilot—they can assess feasibility beforehand.
Frequently asked questions
What if I'm afraid of heights? Many paragliders are. The key is that once you're in the air and realize you're secure and the sensation is smooth, fear often shifts to awe. Talk to your pilot about your concerns before launching.
How long is the flight? Typically 20-30 minutes depending on thermals and wind conditions. The pilot will maximize your flight time if conditions allow.
What happens if the wind is wrong on my flight day? The pilot will assess conditions in the morning. If it's unsafe, you'll be offered a reschedule or refund. This prioritizes your safety—pilots won't fly in unsuitable conditions.
