Itinerary
Day 1
Meet your guide at the Senate Square meeting point. Guided transfer to the snowmobile base in the Sipoo archipelago.
Pickup — Meet at Senate Square (Statue of Alexander II)
Meet the guide near the Alexander II statue in Senate Square for check-in. The minibus departs for the snowmobile base promptly — please arrive 5–10 minutes early to check equipment and paperwork.
Tips from local experts:
- Arrive 5–10 minutes early to check in with the guide at the statue of Alexander II (Senaatintori).
- Carry a small daypack with your phone, travel documents and any medication; larger bags can stay on the minibus.
- If you prefer to drive yourself, plan arrival at the snowmobile base by 09:30 (see snowmobile base placeQuery).
Snowmobile base — gear, safety briefing and preparation
Arrive at the snowmobile base, change into warm snowsuits and boots supplied by the operator, receive helmets, balaclavas and gloves, then a safety briefing and driving instructions before the convoy departs.
Tips from local experts:
- Wear a thin base layer under the provided snowsuit; avoid cotton — choose wool or synthetic materials.
- Bring any prescription glasses or contact lens case — helmets fit over most glasses but bring a lanyard or secure case.
- If you want to ride solo, notify the guide in advance so the vehicle allocation can be prepared.
Snowmobile safari — guided convoy across archipelago
Guided snowmobile convoy exploring frozen inlets and island trails. The guide will lead several stops to explain archipelago life and local nature. Route depends on ice and snow conditions; if sea ice is weak the route is moved to forest and field trails nearby.
Tips from local experts:
- Keep camera batteries warm in an inner pocket — cold drains batteries quickly.
- Follow your guide's spacing and speed instructions exactly; maintain the same driver/passenger pairing for safety.
- Bring sunglasses to protect from snow glare; goggles are useful if it's windy or snowy.
Lunch break on an island (Majholmen when possible)
Longer stop on an island for an open-fire lunch and warm drinks. While food is prepared you can try kick sleds, snowshoe walking or ice fishing (depending on conditions). Menu uses local outdoor foods cooked on gas/grill.
Tips from local experts:
- If you need a particular hot drink (e.g., decaf), tell the guide before departure so they can prepare.
- Wear insulated, waterproof gloves during the lunch stop when handling fishing or sled equipment.
- If sea ice is not strong and the lunch location changes, expect the guide to brief you on the adjusted meeting spot before arrival.
Snowmobile tour continues — return to base
After the lunch break the convoy continues, often via a different route across islands or land trails, returning to the snowmobile base to change back to normal clothes.
Tips from local experts:
- Keep a small layer on under the snowsuit for the return trip; temperatures can drop after stopping.
- Stow any wet items in a plastic bag provided at the base to keep the vehicle dry on the return transfer.
- If you collected any fish or personal items, hand them to the guide for safe transport back to the base.
Dropoff — Return to Senate Square (Helsinki Cathedral)
Change into normal clothes at the base, then transfer back to Helsinki city centre where the minibus drops participants at Senate Square.
Tips from local experts:
- Allow time to change at the base before departure; dryers/benches are limited so bring a spare pair of socks if needed.
- The return transfer arrives at Senate Square; confirm with the guide if you need a different central drop-off point when booking.
- Keep small valuables with you on the minibus — don't leave phones or wallets in provided outdoor clothing.

Snowmobile Safari in Helsinki Archipelago
Why this experience
Winter transforms Helsinki's archipelago into a frozen landscape—islands, passages, and open ice become accessible on snowmobiles. A guided snowmobile safari takes you across the ice from island to island, through channels only passable in deep winter, seeing lighthouses and remote skerries you can only reach this way. You'll ride your own snowmobile (instruction provided) or ride as a passenger on a guided machine. The experience captures the winter adventure spirit that defines Finnish culture. You'll feel the speed, the cold, the isolation of the archipelago in winter. A warming stop with hot drinks and traditional Finnish food breaks up the ride. It's thrilling but not reckless—professional guides prioritize safety and the rhythm of the landscape over adrenaline.
Before you go
- Best time: Winter (January-February) when ice is thick and reliable
- Budget: Snowmobile tours are premium experiences; pricing includes guide, fuel, and warming stop food; dress warmly and bring extra cash for thermal gear if you need to rent
- Difficulty: Moderate — you operate the snowmobile (instruction provided) or sit as a passenger; no prior experience needed, but it requires physical balance and comfort with cold
- What to bring: Extreme cold clothing (insulated winter jacket, warm pants, thermal underwear), insulated boots, helmet (provided), gloves rated for cold, face mask or scarf, water, snacks
- Getting there: Pickup from central Helsinki or meeting at a designated winter sports base
- Accessibility: Snowmobile operation requires physical balance and ability to straddle the machine. Not suitable for significant mobility limitations. Ask your operator about passenger-only options.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a snowmobile license to participate? No. Operators provide full instruction on machine operation. You don't need prior experience—guides ensure everyone is comfortable and confident before departing.
How fast do the snowmobiles go? Tours move at speeds between 30-50 km/h (20-30 mph), adjusted for ice conditions and group comfort. It's thrilling but not extreme racing.
What if the ice isn't thick enough for safe travel? Guides monitor ice conditions closely. Tours only operate when ice is confirmed safe. If conditions aren't suitable, the tour is rescheduled—your safety is the priority.
Can I ride as a passenger instead of operating the snowmobile? Most operators offer passenger options. You'll ride behind a guide. Let them know your preference when booking.
